A Worker In The Field

Matthew 9:35-38 (NLT) “35 Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. 38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”

This is very much the condition of the time in which we now live.  There is so much confusion and despair in the world today. When you look at the state of our nation, it is chaotic and lacks true direction.  Therein speaks to the condition of some aspects of the Christian community; it speaks to the decreasing number of Christians that are spreading the truth of Jesus Christ. There are not enough of us out here in the field, doing what we can for him. As he said to his disciples two thousand years ago, the harvest is indeed great, but there are few workers in the fields.

If we were collectively doing what we should, more lives would be saved, and less chaos would be the result. Folks are still hurting in the world. They are so confused and don’t know where to turn, and what’s worse, they don’t know who they can trust. God saves souls as the love of Jesus Christ is shared. Jesus is the light of the world. He’s the way, and the life. No one can come to God unless they come through him. You and I are the ones to reveal his light, because we carry it on the inside of us.

There is much work to do in the Christian community and outside of it, and it begins with each of us. It only takes one person to make a difference in the life of another. You and I don’t have to save the world. We just have to make sure that we are utilizing the opportunities that God has specifically placed in our path. It starts at home.  We have to teach our children about the love of Christ as early as possible, so that when they go out into the world, they are prepared for what is ahead of them. It is our responsibility to help prepare all the young people under our span of influence, so that they can be fearless warriors for Christ.

We also have to make sure that we are being good and Godly friends.  Sometimes we dig deeper holes for those we care about because we feed them junk food from the world instead of steering them to what God says about the matter. We are called to be the kind of friends that provide sound wisdom and good counsel from God’s Word. This should always be our mission.

I remember meeting a young man many years ago, who went to church with his family on Sundays, but at the age of 32, still didn’t know how to pray. He had been raised in church, but never really learned to go to God on his own and to open up his heart to Heavenly Father through prayer. I made it my business to help him begin the wonderful practice of taking a special time each day to dialogue with our God through private prayer time.

These are small things that we can do, but they have a monumental impact. We have a responsibility as household members of the Kingdom to seek opportunities to sow into people’s lives. Again, you don’t have to set out to impact thousands, but if that is your destiny, God will make a way for it to happen. In the meantime, be sure to take advantage of the opportunities in your everyday life to be a blessing. If you’re not sure about it, pray and ask God to help you to help others, so that you can be a worker in the field for Him.
