Good Behavior Isn’t Enough

Romans 6:23 (NLT) tells us, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” This verse pulls the curtain back on something many people don’t fully understand—the true cost of sin.

I’ve heard both believers and unbelievers say they think getting into heaven is about “being a good person.” It sounds harmless… even comforting. But it’s actually one of the most subtle deceptions the enemy uses to keep people from the truth. Because Scripture makes it clear that “good” isn’t something we can achieve on our own. Ecclesiastes 7:20 (NLT) tells us, “Not a single person on earth is always good and never sins.” And Jesus Himself says in Mark 10:18 (NLT), “Only God is truly good.” So the bar isn’t just doing better than the next person. The bar is perfection. And if we’re being honest, none of us can stand on that level.

So where does that leave us?

It leaves us face-to-face with a truth we don’t always want to admit: we were never going to reach heaven off our behavior. We were never going to earn our way in by trying harder, doing more, or cleaning ourselves up just enough to qualify. “Good enough” was never going to be enough. Because if it was, Jesus wouldn’t have had to come.

When Adam fell, sin didn’t just enter the world—it entered us. It became part of the human condition. Not something we occasionally do… but something we were born into. And no amount of right actions can undo what was broken at the root. We would’ve all perished long ago under the weight of sin. That’s why Jesus came.

Isaiah 64:6 (NLT) tells us, “We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags.” That’s not written to shame us—it’s written to wake us up. To show us that even our best efforts, apart from Christ, can’t bridge the gap between us and God.

But don’t miss this… what we could never earn, God gave freely.

The same verse that tells us the wages of sin is death also tells us that eternal life is a gift—through Jesus Christ. Not something we achieve. Not something we qualify for. This is a gift that was secured by His sacrifice, paid for in full by His blood, and extended to us by grace—not because we earned it, but because God chose to give what we could never produce on our own.

So no, being “good” isn’t enough.
But Jesus is—and because of Him, we can be grateful, forgiven, and free.
