Grace Is Not Permission to Keep Sinning

A woman stands at a fork in the road, considering two different paths, illustrating the choice to turn away from sin and walk in obedience to God.

Understanding God’s Grace and the Call to Repentance

“If I sin, I’ll just ask God to forgive me and keep it pushing.” I once heard a seasoned believer say something along those lines, and I have to tell you, it troubled me. Not because any of us are without sin, but because there didn’t seem to be any concern about repentance. It was almost as though God’s forgiveness was something to fall back on whenever we decided to do what we wanted. And that raises a serious question. Have we become so comfortable talking about God’s grace that we’ve forgotten what it means to honor Him with our lives?

Romans 6:1–2 (NLT) asks, “Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not!” Paul was addressing the very attitude we’re talking about. God’s grace is a wonderful gift, but it was never intended to give us permission to keep doing what we know is wrong. There’s a difference between a believer who struggles with sin and genuinely wants to overcome it, and someone who has already decided to disobey God with the intention of asking for forgiveness afterward. One is fighting against sin, while the other is making room for it.

Nothing Is Hidden from God

Sometimes we forget that even when nobody else knows what we’re doing, God knows. We may be able to hide our choices from family, friends, and the people we worship with, but we can’t hide them from the Lord. Hebrews 4:13 (NLT) says, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.” That’s something we need to take seriously. God sees what we do in public and what we do when nobody is watching. He knows our intentions, our motives, and even the excuses we make for ourselves. We can’t knowingly go against His Word and then act as though asking for forgiveness makes our decision acceptable.

But here’s the beautiful thing about God’s grace. He doesn’t leave us without a way to turn things around. First John 1:9 (NLT) says, “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” God’s willingness to forgive us should never make us careless about sin. It should make us grateful enough to want to turn away from it. Repentance is more than admitting we did something wrong. It involves a change of heart and a willingness to turn from what displeases God. And when we stumble, we don’t have to run away from Him in shame. We can come before Him, confess our sin, and ask Him to help us walk in obedience.

Don’t Make Room for What God Is Calling You to Leave Behind

We all have areas where we need to grow, and none of us has reached perfection. But we can’t become comfortable making excuses for things God has already told us to put away. If there’s something in your life that you know doesn’t please the Lord, don’t keep putting off dealing with it. Take it to Him. Ask Him to help you turn away from it, even if you’ve struggled with it for a long time. God’s grace is precious, and His mercy is greater than we can measure. But grace was never meant to make us comfortable living in sin. It teaches us to turn away from sin and live in a way that honors the One who saved us. ■
