Praying in the Spirit

Dear Heavenly Father,

Sometimes we allow our lives to become so busy that we don’t talk with You as much as we should. We must remind ourselves that our whole reason for existing is to be in relationship with You through the Lord Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Life teaches us that relationships require continuous and meaningful communication and fellowship. Ephesians 1:11 reminds us that we are united in Christ to You, and we’ve also received an inheritance. You chose us in advance, long before we were placed in our mother’s wombs. We didn’t choose You first; You chose us. You marked us out to be Your very own, and You make all things work together according to Your plan. You’ve done all of this because You wanted us to be Your sons and daughters.

As Your children, born-again through the Lord Jesus Christ, Romans 8:9 instructs us to no longer be controlled by a sinful nature. Through the Holy Spirit that indwells us, we have Your nature now, and You’ve commanded us to be controlled by the Spirit. You tell us in Romans 8:14 that everyone that is led by the Spirit are Your children. This is a different way of living than the life we lived before we made Jesus Christ the Head of our lives. Now that we’re saved, we are connected to You intimately through Christ. It is a connection that is not dependent on human languages. It is a Spirit to spirit connection.

Heavenly Father, I’m so thankful for Your Precious Holy Spirit. Romans 5:5 tells us that You’ve given us the Holy Spirit because of Your tremendous love for us, and he’s the one that fills our heart with Your love. We can’t love You the way You deserve to be loved without the Spirit’s help. Romans 8:16 (NLT) says, “For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.” The gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit joins together with our human-spirit. This coming-together union, Spirit to spirit, affirms our sonship through Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:26-27(NLT) says, “And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.” There are times when I feel You moving in my heart, and I know I should pray, but I don’t know what to pray for. Whenever this happens, I purposely decrease so the Spirit can increase. I begin to pray in tongues, because speaking in tongues is perfect prayer through the Holy Spirit.

Speaking in tongues is a manifestation of the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit. It is one of the nine ways in which we can demonstrate outwardly the reality of Your power inwardly. Speaking in tongues is also evidence that we are baptized in the Holy Spirit. Thank You Heavenly Father for the Precious Holy Spirit that our powerful Lord and Savior made available to us. Thank You for the Spirit’s guidance and direction. We don’t always know Your Will, and we don’t know the best decisions and choices to make sometimes, but You have given us Your Spirit. It is good to pray in our own languages or, in other words, to pray with our understanding, but it is excellent to pray in the Spirit. Praying in the Spirit helps us to know Your Will, to navigate the rocky terrain of life, and to pray perfectly.

Thank You for Jesus Christ, and thank You for the Holy Spirit. Let Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
