Please Forgive Us for Not Being Humble

Dear Heavenly Father,

You are holy and magnificent. There is none like You, and You have no equal. You are in a category all by Yourself, and everything You do is filled with Your glory and love. Thank You for creating us and making us Your children through Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for his accomplishment in the earth, for his life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection. You are a faithful and loving Father, and Ephesians 1:3 tells us that You have blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heaven because of our union with Christ. Thank You for blessing us so bountifully in him.

You tell us in James 4:10(NLT), “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.” In order to be humble before You, we must recognize the shape we are in without Your saving grace that is shown to us through Jesus Christ. We must be new creations in Jesus Christ because without being born again through him, we are still operating with a carnal mindset. You tell us in Romans 8:7 that a carnal mind is an enemy against You.

A carnal mind is the mind that Adam and Eve had when they disobeyed You. They were tempted by satan to believe a lie. They wanted independence from Your sovereignty and no longer wanted to be submitted to it in humility. They wanted to do their own thing and be separate from You. Just like satan, they became arrogant, thinking they knew what was best for them, but they didn’t. Only You know what is best for us, and You command us to have faith in this truth.

After receiving Your commandment several times regarding how they should live, Your people that were living in Old Testament times abandoned Your ways and turned to idolatry and disobedience in every way. They refused to honor You, and many horrible things happened to them because of this. In 2Chronicles 7:14, You told them, “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” Even though they turned their backs on You and Your love, You were willing to forgive and to bless them. This is who You are, a forgiving and powerful God, and You deserve our humility, and every other good thing that we can give You.

Most people living in the world today have chosen to do their own thing and to turn their backs on Your Word. They have chosen not to humble themselves before You, and they don’t realize the severe consequences of doing this. They wonder why their lives are not fulfilled and content, and it is because they have refused to humble themselves before Your throne in the way You have commanded.

Heavenly Father, please forgive us for this sin. Thank You for opening our eyes to the ways in which we have dishonored You, to how we have been blind and did not have the kind of appreciation and gratitude we should have had in our hearts for Your blessings. We repent of this sin, Dear Father. We humble ourselves before You. Your Word tells us that You detest a prideful heart, and we don’t want anything in our lives that You find detestable. Thank You for giving us a new heart, one that hungers to please You in all that we undertake to do. We pray this in the powerful name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.■
