Stay Quiet About It!

1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”

Three weeks of consistent phone calls, spontaneous breakfast and lunch meetups—yep, that was enough for my friend to tell a few people about the man she was dating. He’s handsome, financially stable, and speaks like he loves the Lord. As she was telling me how excited she was that he might be the man she’d been praying for, she wasn’t quite prepared when I advised her to keep it quiet and under wraps—for now. It was still too early to tell if he was truly the blessing.

For many single Christians, keeping a new relationship private isn’t easy. But we’ve got to remember: whatever God gives us, we need to guard it. Otherwise, we can lose it. We can’t afford to sleep on our surroundings because the adversary doesn’t. We all know that the devil hates unity and plots against it, especially marriages. Alert—strategizing and watching, he wants to tear down the relationship we’re aiming to build. We can’t let this happen.

I’ve seen people become too comfortable sharing the intimate details of their lives too early—only to regret it when things don’t go as planned. We need to know what we’re working with, and this requires us to lean into God’s wisdom and guidance with patience. We need to hear from Him and wait for His green light. And listen, people love us—they want to see us happy and blest, and they want to share in that happiness as well. However, we need to remember what we’ve been spiritually preparing for. The process of stewarding a blessing is the treasure you’ve been praying to receive. Exercising appropriate discretion is a very important part.

Even with good intentions, some people can speak prematurely into something that God is still shaping. And if we’re honest, sometimes we share because we want the validation more than we want His confirmation. Rushing ahead of God’s timing or exposing what He’s still developing can leave us wide open to discouragement, disappointment, and confusion. Protecting what He’s doing in you isn’t secrecy—it’s stewardship. It’s wisdom to allow Him to finish this work and keep it between you, the Father, and the potential significant person.

Some of the most solid relationships I know were built quietly—no spotlight, no play-by-play updates, just two people seeking God and learning each other in peace.

There’s a verse in Job that always reminds me how damaging it can be when the wrong people get a glimpse into your life. When Job lost everything—his children, livestock, health—the enemy was watching the entire time. Job 2:2 (NLT) says, “Where have you come from?” the Lord asked Satan. Satan answered the Lord, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.” Even though everyone may seem happy for us, there’s always someone that isn’t as much in our corners as they appear. We are often surprised by the people the enemy uses to undermine our blessings. We need to be smart and strategic, especially when favor rests on our lives.

The bottom line: until the Father releases you to share, stay quiet about it. Let Him confirm what’s real before you invite the crowd. Because once something is public, it becomes open to scrutiny, opinions, and potential spiritual interference that could’ve been avoided. Don’t let pressure push you to speak about something that is still in the works. Your obedience to God’s pace is part of the protection. So hold it close, pray about it, and trust Him to unfold it in the right time. When it’s solid, He’ll make it known—and no one will be able to deny that it was Him all along. ■
