Remain Close to God

There’s something powerful about presence. It’s not just about someone physically being around—it’s about how their presence makes you feel anchored, known, and seen. When someone is present in your life, especially someone you trust and love, their nearness brings a certain strength. You feel more confident. More secure. But when that presence is suddenly missing, it creates a noticeable shift. That absence can make us reflect on just how meaningful someone was to us.

“You’re going to miss me when I’m gone.” Have you ever had someone say that to you? And after they left, did you feel it? Did their absence speak louder than their presence ever did? Whether someone walked away from you or you had to walk away for reasons of your own, it can leave you wondering if you lost something you really needed. But here’s what I want to remind you of: if you’re a born-again believer, you don’t ever have to fear missing out on what God has for you. That’s an extraordinarily comforting truth. Psalm 84:11 (NLT) says, “For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.”

If it was meant for your destiny, it will remain—or it will return in God’s timing and God’s way. Our steps are ordered by the Lord. Even if we think we fumbled a good thing or let the wrong one in, Romans 8:28 (NLT) is a wonderful truth that still stands tall: “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” God can take every misstep, every heartbreak, and every “what if,” and work it together for your good—because you love Him and you are called. That means that whatever left wasn’t bigger than God’s plan.

Songs have been written and stories told about the ache of absence when a relationship ends, and you’re left with a void. It’s true: sometimes we just don’t realize the weight of someone’s presence until it’s gone. After spending significant time with someone, you get used to how they operate, the rhythms of their personality, even their quirks. When access is suddenly cut off, their absence can be deafening. And here’s the thing—many people will do just about anything to avoid that kind of loneliness. They’ll fill the space with something… anything. But for those of us who belong to God, we’re invited to go deeper into our relationship with the Father, trusting Him more than we ever did. It’s trusting that what is for us will never walk away. And if it does? Don’t worry—God is not finished yet.

God’s presence doesn’t leave us when people do. He doesn’t walk out. He doesn’t ghost us. He’s not conditional. James 4:8 (NLT) reminds us, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” It’s simple, but powerful. We serve a God who wants to be close to us, and we should always remain close to Him. He wants to be involved in our daily lives—guiding, healing, correcting, comforting, and loving us every step of the way.

And here’s something else to hold onto: we can only truly enjoy the blessing of a significant relationship when the person has been sent by God. That kind of relationship doesn’t come with fear attached. We don’t have to cling tightly out of anxiety or panic that we’ll lose something good. When God sends someone, and our closeness with Him remains the greatest priority of our lives, we can trust that whatever’s meant to stay, will. What’s built on a foundation of faith will be sustained by God’s grace.

So yes, we may miss people sometimes. But we never have to live missing God. If we ever feel distant, it’s not because He moved. The call is always open: draw near. Stay close. Let His presence become your continual joy and pursuit, because that’s where the real power is. That’s where your confidence gets restored, your joy renewed, and your hope comes alive again. ■
