Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
If we pull back the layers and reveal the depth of our desire for marriage, many of our hearts would reveal more worry than faith in this area of our lives. Worry is what a lot of followers of Christ do, especially when it comes to thoughts of being lonely in the future. We worry that we’re not smart or successful enough for the job for the man we hope to meet. There’s this nagging fear that if we make one wrong move, it’ll ruin everything. But Proverbs reminds us that trusting in God—not ourselves—is what calms the nerves inside.
Many of us have been in past relationships where we thought we had met the person we’d spend the rest of our lives with. As things progressed, we were heartbroken to discover their feelings for us were not as we had hoped. Disappointed and hurt beyond what we had ever known, we felt disillusioned about relationships, and some of us even developed anxiety about ever being hurt again. What we didn’t expect was that the demise a relationship with another person would impact our relationship with our Creator.
We might have thought that the intimacy we shared with Heavenly Father was impenetrable—that nothing could injure it—but being blindsided by heartbreak can reveal the fear we’ve harbored. Our walk with the Lord wasn’t as tight as we might have thought. So, it’s not just the heartbreak we need to deal with; we have to consider if maybe we loved someone more than we trusted God.
In Matthew 6:27 (NLT), Jesus Christ asks a profound, yet straightforward question: “Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” In this question, our Lord and Savior is challenging how we think. Worrying doesn’t do anything useful for our lives. It may make us feel like we’re doing something to stay in control, but Jesus makes it clear that worrying and anxiety doesn’t actually help us. These steal our peace and distract us from trusting God. It’s faith in Him that brings peace and liberty.
Life has a way of revealing things about us we didn’t know—especially when we’re hurting. For some, the wake-up call comes through a heartbreak. As Christian women, we have to be vigilant not to let anyone occupy a space in our hearts that was meant for God alone. It’s such a horrendous and costly mistake to do this, Sisters. Yes, God can do anything, and He wants to use His power to bless us, but our love for Him must be real to position us for those treasures. As Mark 12:30 (NLT) says, “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” That kind of love keeps Him first—and protects our hearts from being led astray.
There is no situation too big for God, and no heartbreak you can’t recover from. You can’t force someone to love you, but you can ask God to send someone who will love you wholeheartedly, willingly, and with integrity. Be committed to add greater faith to that prayer—and let this faith replace your heartbreak.
Our Heavenly Father has already proven His love by giving us His only Son as a sacrifice for our sins. So don’t let heartbreak shake your faith in God’s plan for you. He’s never challenged by our uncertainty but make no mistake—we can be hindered by it. That’s why it’s absolutely vital to remember that God has made us worthy through the sacrifice of Christ. Nothing can take that away—not rejection, not failure, not setback. None of these can change that phenomenal truth. So walk in that worth, Sister in Christ. Let your thoughts, words, and actions reflect it, and trust and love God with all that you are. ■
