2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”
Every Christian knows fear. It’s probably one of the biggest eyesores in a believer’s walk. One of those silent heavies—dragging on our hearts, slowing our steps, keeping us from running our race with endurance. Fear wedges itself between us and our fellowship with God. If we’re honest, there are places in our lives where our faith runs deep… but then there are also those other places. The sore spots that are the don’t-touch-this areas of our hearts. That’s exactly where the enemy tries to camp out, using fear to keep us bound so that we don’t walk in the victory and power of Christ. Well, he’s a liar and a fraud, and we have to stop listening to his whispers and trust what God says in His Word.
You see, the thing that makes fear so detrimental to our destinies is that it stalls our progress. It’ll have you walking in circles, stuck on detours, constantly rerouting but never arriving. It’s nothing but recycled pain—trauma in rotation. If it’s triggered, it replays like a broken record, dragging us back into the most uncomfortable scenes of our story. Fear doesn’t just knock on the door—it barges in. You feel it in your chest. It leaks out your pores. People around you can sense it, even when you’re trying to hold it together. We cower. We get defensive. And then fear does what it always does—it starts swinging.
But here’s the truth: fear is just a protective reflex trying to shield you from something God already rescued you from. It tricks your nervous system into thinking you’re still in fight-or-flight when, in reality, you’re free. Instead of rehearsing God’s promises, our minds replay the pain. But pain is not our portion. Neither is fear.
We have the privilege and responsibility to interrupt this pattern of allowing fear to have centerstage. Fear was never meant to lead us—faith was. When we allow fear to dictate our decisions, our pace, and our voice, we end up shrinking back from the very things God is calling us to step into. But when we choose to respond in faith, even in the face of uncertainty, we make room for the Holy Spirit to move through us with boldness, clarity, and power.
Isaiah 43:1-2 (NLT) tells us, “But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, ‘Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.’”
That’s a promise straight from the mouth of God—and He doesn’t renegotiate His promises. The space between where we are and the freedom He’s offering? That’s where faith is meant to rise. But it’s also where fear tries to settle in and hold us back. The truth is, fear doesn’t go after the weak—it targets those with power and potential. Because the moment you step out of fear and into faith, you become a real threat to the enemy’s plans.
This is one of the reasons God boldly commands us to be strong—not because we have it all together, but because we have Him. We’ve been given His Spirit, and with that comes the responsibility to actually walk in it—to carry ourselves like we know who we belong to and what’s been placed inside of us. Strength isn’t about pretending we’re unshaken; it’s about standing firm because we know Who’s holding us up.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NLT) says, “For we live by believing and not by seeing.” When we finally recognize that fear isn’t just a feeling—it’s a memory with too much airtime—we can shut it down. You don’t have to be brave to move forward. You just have to believe. Sometimes belief feels like stepping off a ledge with no floor beneath you… but Isaiah 43:1-2 reminds us that even there, He is with us.
Don’t let fear shrink your vision of what God has already done in your life. Mute the echo of old wounds. You are healed. Walk in your deliverance. Own your freedom. And know, deep down in your soul—fear is no longer your portion. ■
