“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.” (John 8:36, NLT)
Freedom in Christ isn’t just a one-time moment—it’s a lifestyle. When Jesus breaks chains, He doesn’t simply remove the obvious sins or struggles; He teaches us how to live free, day by day. But the truth is, many of us walk out of one prison only to start circling the same old patterns. We’re free, but we don’t always know how to live like it.
Breaking Old Cycles
Every one of us has “default settings”—habit patterns shaped by pain, disappointment, or even survival. Those patterns might look like people-pleasing, fear-driven decisions, emotional walls, or unhealthy coping. They feel familiar, but familiarity isn’t freedom. Romans 12:2 (NLT) tells us, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” Freedom requires new thought patterns, new responses, and new rhythms of life that reflect Christ’s work in us.
Choosing New Rhythms
The released don’t keep circling their old prisons—they form new habits that protect their freedom. Instead of bitterness, they choose forgiveness. Instead of despair, they choose hope. Instead of control, they choose surrender. Galatians 5:16 (NLT) reminds us, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” Following the Spirit’s lead is how we keep walking forward instead of falling back into the familiar chains.
Walking in Daily Surrender
Living released is less about perfection and more about posture. Every morning we get to decide: will I carry yesterday’s weights, or will I walk in the liberty Christ already purchased for me? Philippians 3:13–14 (NLT) says, “Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” The released are not chained to yesterday—they are pressing toward tomorrow with hope.
The Witness of the Released
Our freedom isn’t just for us—it’s a testimony. When others see joy where there once was sorrow, forgiveness where there once was bitterness, and peace where there once was chaos, they catch a glimpse of the One who set us free. Isaiah 61:3 (NLT) says that God will give “a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair.” The habit patterns of the released point back to Jesus—the Deliverer, the Healer, the Chain-Breaker. This is the mark of the released: not just living free, but living as a witness to the power of Christ at work in us.
Reflection & Soul Work
- Where am I still repeating habit patterns that don’t match the freedom I have in Christ?
- What new habits—prayer, gratitude, surrender, forgiveness—can I begin to strengthen my walk in freedom?
- Write out what “living released” looks like for you in this season, and ask the Holy Spirit to empower you to walk it out.
Prayer
Dear Father God, thank You that who the Son sets free is truly free. Break every old pattern that keeps me circling bondage, and teach me to live in the new rhythms of freedom You’ve given me. May my life be a testimony of Your power and grace. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, I pray, amen.
