How God Calls Us to Shift, Grow, and Prepare for What’s Next
Proverbs 20:4 (ESV):
“The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing.”
Fall has always been my favorite season. The cooler air, the vibrant colors of the leaves, the shift in light—it all signals change, and I love to soak it in. But beyond the beauty, fall reminds me that God calls everything around us to transform; nothing is meant to stay the same. Just like the seasons change, God calls our lives to shift too—sometimes in ways we notice, sometimes in ways we don’t.
Change Requires Action
Just like the seasons force us to shift our routines, asking God to bring something new into our lives often requires us to change as well. Most of us can admit that we can’t expect different results without first doing something different. Single women who go year after year with no change are often facing a call to adjust their approach—to shift their mindset, habits, and perspective. Romans 12:2 (NLT) reminds us, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” This verse shows that God won’t do the work for us; He invites us to step into it because the ability to change is already inside us. Through the Spirit of Christ who lives within, we have everything we need to become who God desires us to be.
Embracing the Discomfort
Change isn’t always easy. When we step out of our comfort zones, it can feel awkward, uncertain, or even scary. But God uses these moments to shape us, stretch us, and prepare us for the new things He wants to do in our lives. Just like a tree has to bend in the wind to grow stronger roots, we have to bend and adjust to grow into the people God created us to be. The key is staying close to Him, trusting His guidance, and remembering that every shift—even the uncomfortable ones—is part of His plan for our growth and blessings.
Partnering with God in Change
Philippians 2:12–13 (NLT) says, “Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation. Do it with fear and trembling, for God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” This passage reminds us that new beginnings aren’t just about wishing or hoping for change—they require effort on our part. God is at work in us, shaping our desires and giving us the power to do what pleases Him, but we still have a role to play. Embracing newness means leaning into that work, making adjustments, and actively cooperating with God’s guidance so that His plans for our lives can take root and grow.
We can’t walk a scripted life where you fake the love of God or pretend that it’s deeper than it really is. Just as Proverbs 20:4 warns, if you don’t plow at the right time, expecting a harvest will only leave you empty-handed. That’s not how a child of God should prepare. God’s love has to be rooted so deeply within you that while you’re waiting for the right person, your heart continues to grow in Him. That growth creates the space where your future husband—or any blessing He’s promised—can fit perfectly into the life God is shaping for you.
Christ at the Center
At the center of every new beginning is Christ. He’s the constant we can rely on when everything around us is shifting. When we lean into Him, let His love anchor our hearts, and actively cooperate with His work in our lives, we’re ready for whatever He has in store. Change might feel uncomfortable, uncertain, or even challenging, but with Christ at the center, it becomes an opportunity to grow, to trust deeper, and to step into the new things He has prepared. New beginnings require adjustment—but with Him, every shift, every effort, and every moment of waiting can lead to the harvest of blessings He promised. ■
