Sometimes when God speaks—whether through His Word, prayer, or a quiet nudge from the Spirit—what He says doesn’t immediately make sense to us. It can feel so outside of how we think that our first response is, “God, did I really hear You correctly?” Most of us have asked that question more than once. In moments like that, it helps to remember what the Lord tells us plainly in Isaiah 55:8 (NLT): “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” That verse isn’t meant to shut us down or confuse us. He’s reminding us that His view is bigger than ours.Morning dawn background with the word “God” in large text in the foreground.
When He speaks, He’s not pulling from human logic or earthly perspective; He’s speaking as the One who sees the end from the beginning.
God is not in a box, but we often try to keep Him in one. We forget just how magnificent and powerful He is. The truth is, we’re never going to fully figure God out with our human minds. That’s where faith steps in. Not just believing that God exists but trusting that He is more real than what we see or feel in front of us. Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) reminds us, “It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” Seeking God isn’t about chasing experiences or answers on demand; it’s about building trust. Faith means being fully persuaded in who God is, even when our understanding hasn’t caught up yet.
God also knows we need help learning how to hear Him. That’s why He gave us the Holy Spirit. Jesus said in John 16:13 (NLT), “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” God doesn’t leave us guessing or alone. He guides us step by step, helping us recognize His voice over time. Hearing God clearly isn’t about being perfect—it’s about staying open and willing to listen.
Sometimes God’s direction feels uncomfortable because it pushes against what we’ve grown used to. God doesn’t just speak to agree with us or make us feel better about our choices. He speaks to shape us. And that shaping takes humility, because it means admitting we don’t see the whole picture. Romans 12:2 (NLT) puts it this way: “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” God changes us from the inside out, not all at once, but little by little.
When blessings are flowing because we’re in that place where our desires are aligned with God’s Will, life usually feels pretty good. Things make sense. Doors are open. And honestly, our faith doesn’t get stretched much in that season. Faith gets tested when the season starts shifting into growth, and obedience is asking us to trust God while everything feels out of pocket. That’s the moment where letting go becomes necessary. God is calling us to move forward without having every detail mapped out. And the truth is, the more we learn to trust Him, the easier it becomes to follow His lead.
Proverbs 3:5 (NLT) reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” That verse isn’t telling us to shut our minds off or ignore what we feel. It’s inviting us to loosen our grip on the need to understand everything before we obey. Trust grows when we choose God’s direction over our own logic. And with time, we begin to see that His ways really are higher than ours — not to confuse us or keep us guessing, but to lead us somewhere better than we could have taken ourselves. ■
