Winter: The Season of Reflection and Breaking Ground

Winter may look quiet on the surface, but in God’s hands it is a season of deep preparation. Beneath the stillness, roots stretch further down, and the soil is prepared for planting. Winter is not wasted time — it is holy ground. In Christ, this season is where reflection clears away what no longer serves you, and breaking ground makes space for new life to come. Though it may feel barren, Winter is where God prepares the soil of your soul for the next harvest.

What to Expect in This Season

Expect God to slow you down. Winter often feels still, but this pause is not punishment — it is preparation. Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NLT) reminds us, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” In this stillness, God cultivates peace within you, even as the enemy tries to stir up strife.

Expect to see things you didn’t notice before. Reflection has a way of bringing clarity. Psalm 139:23–24 (NLT) says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” This is where gentleness takes root, as pride gets exposed and released.

Expect breaking ground in areas where God wants to plant something new. The soil must be turned, the hardness broken up, for new roots to take hold. Hosea 10:12 (NLT) tells us, “Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and shower righteousness upon you.” As you yield, He strengthens your self-control, even in places where indulgence once ruled.

The Battle

Winter can feel like emptiness, but the real battle is against discouragement and isolation. The enemy whispers: “You’re stuck. Nothing is happening. God has forgotten you.” But the truth is that Winter is full of unseen work. This is the season where the Spirit cultivates depth beneath the surface.

Peace vs. Anxiety and Restlessness
The Spirit is cultivating peace in you, but anxiety and restlessness may rise up like weeds. Think of them as signal lights reminding you to stay rooted.

  • Anxiety says: “You need to make something happen right now.”
  • Jesus says: “My peace I give you” (John 14:27, NLT).
  • Restlessness says: “This season is pointless.”
  • The Spirit whispers: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, NLT).

Peace in Winter isn’t the absence of movement — it’s the presence of God in the stillness.

Gentleness vs. Pride

Winter softens the ground of your heart. This is where gentleness takes root, as pride is exposed and surrendered. Pride leans on self-effort and demands its own way. Gentleness lays that down and lets the Spirit’s power shine through. It’s not weakness — it’s God’s strength expressed in us when we stop striving. Proverbs 22:4 (NLT) reminds us, “True humility and fear of the Lord lead to riches, honor, and long life.” In this quiet season, God humbles and shapes you, making space for His Spirit to move through you so you can walk in more of His grace.

Self-Control vs. Indulgence
Winter is also where self-control is strengthened. Indulgence wants quick fixes and comfort, but self-control holds steady, waiting on God’s timing. Titus 2:12 (NLT) says, “And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God.” When you resist the urge to try to get ahead of God or fill the silence with distractions, you allow the Lord to break new ground and prepare you for lasting growth.

Winter is not emptiness— it is about depth. The work of breaking ground may feel hard, but it is the very thing that allows future fruit to take root.
