5 Steps to Overcoming Obstacles and Reaching Greater Levels of Faith

How to build unshakable faith when life keeps throwing obstacles your way

Life has a way of coming at us hard. One problem shows up, and before you catch your breath, here comes another. Ever been there? It feels like trouble is on repeat. But Romans 8:37 (NLT) reminds us of something powerful: “No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.” In other words, no matter how relentless the obstacles, we’re still more than conquerors through Jesus Christ. That’s not just a nice church phrase—it’s our reality. The challenge is getting our minds and hearts to catch up with that truth. Faith has to become more than a Sunday feeling—it has to be our first reflex when life knocks at the door.

Step One – Train Your Mind to Think Higher

The enemy knows that if he can keep your thoughts in chaos, he can keep your life going around in circles. 2 Corinthians 4:4 (NLT) tells us, “Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News.” God’s Word makes it crystal clear that the enemy seeks to throw us back and knock us down; he seeks to corrupt our paths and cripple our endurance so that we lack the energy to climb higher. That’s his strategy—confusion, distraction, and discouragement until you can’t even see the solution God’s already placed in front of you.

God tells us in Ephesians 4:23 to renew our minds, and this means we must change the way we think. Philippians 4:8 (NLT) breaks it down: ““And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” We have to stop letting our minds park in places of disappointment and defeat. Shift gears. Start thinking the higher thoughts of Christ.

Here’s the truth—God won’t do the thinking for us. He’s given us the free will to decide where we’ll let our minds live. So we have to discipline our thoughts like a trainer working out a muscle. The more you flex it, the stronger it gets. And when your thought life gets stronger, your faith will too.

Step Two – Detox your heart from bitterness

Bitterness is sneaky. It doesn’t just sit quietly in a corner—it grows roots. And once those roots spread, they choke out peace, joy, and faith. Hebrews 12:15 (NLT) warns us: “Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.” That’s razor sharp, and it’s a warning we must not overlook. Bitterness doesn’t just affect you—it seeps into your relationships, your prayers, your outlook. It contaminates the soil of your soul.

Think of it like this: every prayer we lift to God is like calling for a plane to land. But if the runway is cluttered with resentment, anger, and frustration, where’s the blessing supposed to land? Bitterness blocks the flow of God’s best.

Ephesians 4:31 (NLT) couldn’t be clearer: “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.” In other words—clean house. Let it go. Trade bitterness for forgiveness, swap anger for humility, replace resentment with reverence for God. When you do, your heart gets lighter, your faith gets stronger, and your spirit gains momentum. That’s the kind of landing strip blessings are looking for.

Step Three – Align with Heaven’s Blueprint

We live in a culture that tells us to “manifest your dreams” and “chase your truth.” But Jesus said something different. Matthew 6:33 (NLT) puts it straight: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” That’s the blueprint. Jesus didn’t walk this earth chasing His own plan—He lived fully surrendered to the Father’s Will. And if the Son of God lived like that, why would we think we could do any less?

Here’s the truth—sometimes our prayers sound more like wish lists than surrender. We’re asking God to rubber-stamp our plans instead of leaning into His. But faith doesn’t flow from self-will; it flows from trust. Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) reminds us, “It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”

It’s about more than just walking away from sin—it’s about walking toward purpose. God takes the broken pieces, the wrong turns, the setbacks, and when we align with His Will, He weaves it all together for good, just like Romans 8:28 tells us. That’s the reward of surrender: when your life lines up with Heaven’s blueprint, you don’t just survive obstacles—you rise above them.

Step Four – Pray Beyond Blessings—Pray for Growth

A man once ran up to Jesus in Mark 10, eager for a word, but not ready for change. That’s the same trap many of us fall into—we want the blessing, but we don’t want the transformation. We’ll pray for the promotion, the healing, the open door, but skip over the prayer that matters most: “Lord, grow me.”

Life is always shifting, stretching, and moving forward. And God designed it that way—to keep pushing us toward the fullest expression of Christ within us. 2 Peter 3:18 (NLT) tells us, “Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Growth is not optional if you want to see God’s best—it’s the very foundation for continued blessing.

So don’t just pray for the gift; pray to be shaped for it. Pray for less of your flesh and more of Christ. Pray for wisdom that matches the weight of what you’re asking for. And keep praying it, over and over, until growth becomes your lifestyle. That’s when faith stops being fragile and starts becoming unshakable.

Step Five – Let the Spirit Lead the Way

God never meant for your life to be dull, predictable, or powerless. 1 Corinthians 4:20 (NLT) says, “For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.” That’s the difference between religion and relationship. Religion talks about God. Relationship lives by His power.

When the Spirit leads, life doesn’t stay stuck on repeat. Your faith keeps climbing. Your heart stays flexible. Your steps line up with purpose. Renewing your mind, guarding your heart, seeking His Will, praying for growth—these aren’t just random disciplines. They’re training for obedience. And obedience is what keeps you in step with the Spirit.

Here’s the beauty of it: when you let the Spirit lead, you stop fighting battles in your own strength. You stop chasing things that drain you. Instead, you rise above obstacles with a strength that doesn’t run out. You don’t just overcome—you grow stronger in the process. That’s what it means to live by God’s power.

When Faith Becomes Your Reflex

The real win isn’t just getting past obstacles—it’s becoming the kind of believer whose first response is faith, no matter what comes.

Obstacles are real, but so is the power of God at work in you. Train your mind to think higher. Detox your heart from bitterness. Align your will with Heaven’s blueprint. Pray for growth, not just blessings. And most of all, let the Spirit lead every step. Do these, and you won’t just survive trials—you’ll overcome them with a faith that keeps climbing.

Here’s the truth: obstacles don’t get the last word—faith does. And when faith becomes your reflex, nothing can stop you from reaching the greater levels God has already written into your story.

Reflection & Soul Work

Take a few moments to journal:

  • Where am I most tempted to let fear, bitterness, or self-will take the lead instead of faith?

  • What would it look like if faith became my first reflex in that area of my life?

  • Which step—renewing my mind, releasing bitterness, seeking God’s Will, praying for growth, or following the Spirit—do I need to lean into most right now?

Let your answers be honest and raw. This is where faith starts growing deeper roots.

Prayer

Dear Father God,
Thank You that through Christ I am more than a conqueror. Teach me to renew my mind with Your truth, to release every trace of bitterness, and to align my heart with Your perfect Will. Grow me beyond seeking blessings to seeking transformation. Help me to follow the Spirit’s leading in every step so that faith becomes my reflex and victory my testimony.
In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, I pray, amen. ■
