Expect the Unexpected

You know that feeling you get when you find money in your coat pocket—the little dance you do, the smile that hits your face like sunshine? It’s unexpected. It’s exciting, especially when you really needed it. It’s like a mini jackpot moment. Now multiply that by a thousand—that’s what it feels like when God surprises you with something you didn’t even know to pray for. Those blessings that hit your life out of nowhere, the ones that leave you speechless? That’s the kind of God we serve. He’s not only our Provider—He’s the expert in divine surprises that are tailor made just for us.

Let’s be real: our minds struggle to stretch beyond what our eyes can see. We tend to dream within the confines of our comfort zones. We think in budgets, deadlines, and what’s “realistic.” But the Christian life doesn’t run on human logic—it runs on faith. And faith calls us higher. Faith asks us to believe in what we can’t see yet. That’s why it’s hard. But Ephesians 3:20 (NLT) reminds us that God is never confined by what’s normal to us: “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” Did you catch that? Infinitely more. Not slightly more. Not kind of better. Infinitely! Our God is glorious beyond our imaginations! He blows our minds with what He does.

I’ll admit—I’ve been guilty of putting God in a box. A box built by past experiences, disappointments, and what I thought was “wise.” I forgot that He’s not writing my story as I go along—He’s already authored it. He’s not reacting to my life events—He’s already declared the end from the beginning. And when we really grasp who He is, when we stop limiting Him based on our limited thinking, our faith starts to stretch. That’s when bold prayers rise. That’s when trust grows deep. Hebrews 4:16 (NLT) tells us plainly, “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Boldness only shows up when we’re confident in who we’re believing in.

Acts 2:17 (NLT) tells us, “‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.”
This is evidence of the Spirit’s work, stirring up purpose, greater insight, and power in every generation.

Jesus Christ said in John 16:13 (NLT), “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” But here’s the problem—far too often, we brush off the dreams and visions the Holy Spirit gives us. They feel too big, too unrealistic, too far beyond our current resources. So we shrink them down or tuck them away. But we’ve got to move away from that kind of thinking.

When the Holy Spirit gives us a dream, it’s not built on our economy but God’s economy. It’s not scheduled according to our timeline—it unfolds according to His perfect timing. He is the God of the exceedingly abundantly—of infinitely more than we can ask or think. Our responsibility isn’t to worry about the “how”, it’s to get busy renewing our minds to His Word, to keep confessing His promises, and to walk in a spirit of expectancy. If God gave you a dream, He already has a plan to bring it to pass. You just need to lean on Him and trust in His process.

We have to remember that we are only alive and in the earth because of the goodness, power, and love of our Heavenly Father. Our faith should always be in Him. He’s the God of the impossible who parts seas, rains manna from heaven, shuts the mouths of lions, heals the blind, and raises the dead. As Jesus says in Matthew 19:26 (NLT), “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.” There is no limit to what God can do. He doesn’t need conditions to be perfect—He just needs us to believe and trust in Him with all our hearts.

Believing big means expecting big. Not because we’re entitled, but because we understand the nature of the One we’re trusting. To “expect the unexpected” in the kingdom of God means to live with a holy anticipation. It means walking into each day open to divine detours, unexpected blessings, and sudden shifts that work in your favor. God is not trying to make us live small. He wants us to be great so that we give all the glory to Him. Promotions that seem too big, healing that seemed too far gone, and reconciliation you stopped praying for because you thought it was dead—God is able to do the exceedingly abundantly. In Jeremiah 32:27 (NLT), He says, “I am the Lord, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me?” Our believing needs to rise to this truth.

Let’s stop preparing for disappointment and start preparing room for miracles. Let’s stop rehearsing the worst and start making space for the best. Yes, life can be hard. Yes, delays happen. But don’t let what hasn’t happened yet make you forget what God can do. He’s not a man. He doesn’t operate on our calendar or our comfort level. He’s the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. His ways are higher, His timing is perfect, and His promises are guaranteed. ■
