Good Wives Are Becoming Scarce

Ecclesiastes 7:28 (NLT)
“Though I have searched repeatedly, I have not found what I was looking for. Only one out of a thousand men is virtuous, but not one woman!”

When asked what it is about us women that might cause a man to be attracted to us, many of us will say that it’s our bubbly personality or our physicality. Some might even think it’s their great job and ability to hold it down financially. Probably only a small few would say that it’s the love of Christ in their hearts that will magnetize them to the right person. On the flip side, when I’ve posed this question to single men, it’s my experience that very few of them mention finances. They talk about loyalty and attractiveness but being respectful towards them and the relationship seems to be a common thread. There’s no denying that many women believe that good husbands are few and far between, but if we took a poll of all the eligible bachelors, it’s not a stretch to say that they believe good wives are becoming just as scarce.

Have Faith in God
Let’s hope that’s not true. And even on the off chance that it might be, we should be confident that our faith in God will make all the difference in our hopes of partnering well. Jesus Christ said in John 14:13-14(NLT), “13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” This is the promise that our Lord and Savior has made to all those who follow him. And as his followers, we must understand the weight of what he’s promising in these verses. The name of Jesus Christ isn’t just any name. Philippians 2:10-11 tells us that one day, every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth, at the name of Jesus Christ, and every mouth will confess that he is Lord. This lets us know that praying in his name is serious business.

When we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, we should be praying in faith and with a thankful heart for all the power that his name represents. We should be praying a prayer that pleases God because it is backed by the promises that He’s made to us in His Word. When this is the way we pray, we can always end it by thanking Heavenly Father for bringing our desires to pass, because He is sure to do it if we believe.

Bring good
Proverbs 31:10-12(NLT) says, 10 Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies. 11 Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life. 12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.” As women of faith in Christ, we must be careful not to allow the world to talk us out of being what God defines as a good and Godly wife. An effective prayer of faith towards marriage is one where we understand God’s requirement for a good wife, and we are committed to be that kind of woman because we want to please our Heavenly Father. God’s standard doesn’t make us less than any other human being. It makes us the embodiment of Christ. This will always be His Will for us, whether we desire marriage or not.

God doesn’t tailor make a man to fit us. If He did this, many of us would be upset, because that man might be a match for some of the baggage we haven’t yet released. Our Heavenly Father will send someone to walk with us through life that He knows will bless our lives according to His Will and purpose. This requires something of us. It requires that we understand that we are to bring good to the man and the marriage. This means we are to lay down our agenda for what we think we need and place the good of our spouses above that.

Proverbs 12:4(NLT) says, “A worthy wife is a crown for her husband.” It’s not so much about applying our faith towards marriage. Many singles are doing this, and only focusing their prayers on getting married, but this is not enough. Our faith must be applied to our commitment to change the things that need to be changed, to make the shifts to things that need to be shifted, and to put on more of the love of Jesus Christ so that we are the wives and women that God intends us to be. Good wives and good husbands are only scarce to those that are not spiritually prepared to receive them. Don’t let that be you. Pray to be conditioned, strengthened, and humbled according to God’s Word so that you will be the kind of wife that goes above and beyond to please God and bless her husband. ■
