Drawing Near to God Through Jesus Christ
There is nothing in this life that compares to knowing God. We can experience His blessings, thank Him for the things He has done, and praise Him for the prayers He has answered, but there is something even greater than receiving from His hand—we have been given the privilege of knowing Him. Through Jesus Christ, we have been brought near to the Father. John 14:6 (NLT) says, “Jesus told him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.’” Jesus didn’t simply come to make our lives better. He came to reconcile us to God. Because of Him, we can come before the Father, talk to Him, worship Him, learn His heart through His Word, and grow in our relationship with Him.
And God doesn’t invite us into a distant relationship with Him. He invites us to come close. James 4:8 (NLT) says, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” There is something beautiful about spending time with God when we are not asking Him for anything. We can sit in His presence. We can open His Word because we want to hear from Him. We can talk to Him about what is on our hearts and worship Him simply because of who He is. The more time we spend with our Heavenly Father, the more we begin to recognize His ways and understand what pleases Him. Intimacy with God is built as we continue coming to Him—not only when we are hurting, frightened, or in need, but because we genuinely desire to be near Him.
Jesus teaches us that this relationship is one of abiding. John 15:4 (NLT) says, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.” We were never meant to visit with Jesus occasionally and then try to live the rest of our lives apart from Him. We need Him every moment of every day. We need His Word. We need prayer. We need the Holy Spirit helping us, teaching us, correcting us, and leading us into the Will of God. And as we remain in Christ, something happens within. Our desires begin to change. Our love for Him grows. We begin to treasure our relationship with Him, not simply because of what God does for us, but because knowing Christ becomes precious to us.
The apostle Paul had walked with Christ, served Him, suffered for Him, preached the Gospel, and still there was a longing within him to know Jesus more. Philippians 3:10 (NLT) says, “I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead.” And the more we know Jesus, the more we come to know the Father He came to reveal. Jesus said in John 14:9 (NLT), “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father!” We never reach a place where we have learned all there is to know of God. We never outgrow our need for His Word, prayer, or time in His presence. After years of walking with Him, there should still be a desire within us to know Him more deeply. What a wonderful thing it is when knowing God, spending time with Him, becomes more precious to us than any other thing in life.
There’s no greater pleasure in all of existence than walking with the Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord. The longer we walk with God, the more we discover that He Himself is indeed the treasure. Yes, we thank Him for His provision. We praise Him for His protection. We rejoice when He opens doors, answers prayers, and makes ways we could never have made for ourselves. But somewhere along the way, our hearts should begin to say, “Lord, even more than what You can give me, I want You.” Psalm 73:25–26 (NLT) says, “Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth. My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” There truly is nothing like knowing Him. Through Jesus Christ, we have been given access to the Father, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the privilege of spending the rest of our lives drawing nearer to the One who loved us first. ■
