Aisha recently picked up a second job—not just to manage debt, but to shoulder the full weight of life on her own. With both of her adult children now living on their own, building lives and families apart from her, the weight of daily life feels heavier than ever. Without a husband by her side, she’s left to carry what she calls “the heavy lifting”—working long hours, paying every bill, and searching for help to fix the things around the house she can’t manage alone. “I know God never meant for a woman to be single,” she said, “because this is just too much for one person to handle.” And truthfully, she’s not wrong. God never intended for a man or woman to walk through life without support. From the very beginning, He designed us for connection—for unity and covenant.
Scripture tells us in Ecclesiastes 4:9 (NLT), “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor.” When God created Adam, He saw that it was not good for man to be alone, and He made a helper suitable for him. That divine design hasn’t changed. The desire to share the load, the laughter, and the calling is holy.
Marriage is not simply about romance—it is a sacred partnership. In Romans 16:3–5 (NLT), Paul highlights the powerful ministry of Priscilla and Aquila, writing, “Give my greetings to Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in the ministry of Christ Jesus. In fact, they once risked their lives for me… Also give my greetings to the church that meets in their home.” This married couple weren’t just homemakers—they were builders of the church, co-laborers in the gospel, opening their home and risking their lives to support the ministry of Christ. Likewise, Acts 18:1–3 tells us they worked alongside Paul as tentmakers, blending their business with their faith. Their marriage was not just companionship—it was mission. God calls us to build something far beyond ourselves, and He uses marriages as vessels to build us up and advance His Kingdom.
But here’s the honest truth: many followers of Christ are walking through life with a deep desire for marriage, while also carrying burdens alone. If you feel that tension, know this—your longing is not selfish, and your wait is not unnoticed. God sees, and He cares.
Psalm 37:4 (NLT) reminds us, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” However, desiring a godly spouse also requires godly preparation. There is work to do before the wedding day arrives. Ask yourself: how will we build God’s Kingdom together? What will our home represent? If your future spouse isn’t fully surrendered to Christ, are you willing to love him through that process? Because if he’s not saved yet, your walk with God may be the first gospel he experiences. 1 Peter 3:1 (NIV) says, “…that they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives.” That kind of love that preaches all by itself. It’s a powerful ministry that begins long before vows are exchanged.
Marriage is a ministry, and like every ministry, it starts at home. You cannot pour into others if there is chaos, resentment, or disorder in your own house. As 1 Corinthians 3:9 (NLT) reminds us, “We are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building.” That means God is actively cultivating and shaping your life—right now. Let Him strengthen your foundation, refine your character, and teach you how to serve in love. Because the work He does in your single season is what prepares you for your covenant season. Don’t rush the process. Build with Him first, so you’ll know how to build with someone else when the time comes. ■
