How the Truth of Jesus Christ Breaks the Lies That Keep Us Bound
John 8:32 (NLT)
“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
We can’t get any plainer than what our Master Jesus has said in this simple yet extremely powerful verse. The truth sets us free, and when it does, we are free indeed. But the truth that Jesus is talking about is more than simply discovering facts or learning something new. He is talking about knowing Him, walking with Him, and allowing His Word to expose what is false so that we can live in the freedom He came to give us.
There is something powerful about that moment when the light comes on and you realize you have been believing something that was never true. Maybe it was a lie someone spoke over your life. Maybe it was a wound that shaped the way you saw yourself. Maybe it was a mindset the enemy used to keep you stuck, fearful, or bound. But then the Holy Spirit shines His light into that place, suddenly you begin to see differently.
And listen, we have to be real about it—that moment can be uncomfortable. Truth has a way of exposing what we would rather avoid. Sometimes it stings. Sometimes it hurts. Sometimes the realization of what we believed, accepted, or carried for years feels heavy before it feels freeing. The pain is real, and it may take time to process what God has revealed.
But healing begins when we stop running from the truth and allow Jesus Christ to meet us in it. 1 John 1:9 (NLT) says, “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
Because once the initial shock wears off, something changes. The weight begins to lift. The confusion begins to clear. The lies that once controlled our thoughts begin to lose their power. We start walking differently. We start thinking differently. We begin to see ourselves, others, and our circumstances through the truth of God’s Word.
That is the freedom Jesus came to give us.
Hebrews 12:1 (NLT) says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”
Truth be told, some of the heaviest things we carry are the lies we have believed for years. Sometimes we don’t even realize how much weight we’re carrying until God begins to lift it from our shoulders. The lies we believe about who we are, what we’re worth, and what God says about us can have a powerful influence on the way we think, the choices we make, and even the relationships we build. But when we surrender those places to the Holy Spirit, He begins the deep work of replacing lies with His truth and bringing healing and freedom to our hearts.
The Holy Spirit will never force us to open the places we keep hidden. He lovingly invites us to surrender those wounded areas to Him. He is our Comforter and Helper, and He leads us into truth—not to condemn us, but to restore us. As we invite God to search our hearts and respond to what He reveals, He begins removing the things that have kept us bound and replaces them with the peace, identity, and freedom we have through Jesus Christ.
God desires more for us than simply surviving life. He wants us to experience the fullness that comes from walking closely with Him. Part of that relationship is allowing Him to heal the places that have been wounded and restore the areas of our lives that have been broken. Ephesians 3:19 (NLT) says, “May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” As we experience the love of Jesus Christ more deeply, the Holy Spirit uses that truth to bring healing to the deepest places of our hearts and lead us into the freedom, wholeness, and fullness of life God has prepared for us. ■
