When You Can’t See What God Is Doing

Trusting God When the Road Between Where You Are and Where You Want to Be Feels Too Long

For some single women who have prayed to God for a husband, the distance between point A and point B has started to feel like a wilderness experience. You have prayed. You have waited. You have tried to be patient. And after a while, you may find yourself asking the same questions over and over again: What do I do next? Where am I going? What comes next? How long am I going to be here?

Those are honest questions. We ask our loving Heavenly Father these things because we want to understand what He is doing with our lives. Sometimes God gives us an answer quickly. Other times, we don’t get one. And that’s the part that can be difficult. You wish God would give you a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what He has already worked out. If you could see the other side of this season, maybe waiting would feel a whole lot easier. But God doesn’t always show us what He is doing while He is doing it.

There Is a Purpose in the Wilderness

Isaiah 40:3 (NLT) says, “Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting, ‘Clear the way through the wilderness for the Lord! Make a straight highway through the wasteland for our God!’”

This Scripture is speaking specifically about preparing the way for the coming of our Lord, but there is something in it that speaks to us about seasons when God is preparing a way that we cannot yet see. There are seasons for everything, including seasons of waiting. And waiting doesn’t mean God has said no to you. It may mean that God is doing work that you can’t see yet. We can trust that even if we can’t see it, everything is working out according to His purpose and our good.

He may be preparing your heart for what you have prayed for. He may be dealing with things in you that you didn’t even realize needed attention. He may be working on your future husband. He may be arranging circumstances that have not come together yet. You don’t know everything God is doing behind the scenes, and honestly, you don’t have to. What you do know is that your life is still in His hands.

That is why this season cannot be wasted by constantly focusing on what is missing.

God May Be Clearing the Path

This is where surrender becomes real. Not the kind of surrender we talk about when everything is going our way, but the kind where we say, “Lord, I don’t understand this, but I trust You anyway.” You may have had your own timeline for your life. You may have thought marriage would have happened by now. You may have imagined that you would be in a completely different place at this point in your life. But God’s Will has to become more important than the timeline we created for ourselves.

Psalm 118:23 (NLT) says, “This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.”

There is something comforting about remembering that God does not need us to figure everything out before He can accomplish His Will. Sometimes He is clearing a path that we cannot see. Sometimes He is closing doors we would have tried to walk through. Sometimes He is dealing with us before He brings us into something we have prayed for. And sometimes, we simply have to trust Him with what we cannot yet understand.

You Don’t Have to Make It Happen

God’s hand is on your life. You do not have to manipulate opportunities, force relationships, or try to make something happen because you are afraid that nothing will if you don’t push and press it into being. There is a difference between being open to what God is doing and trying to take over the process because you are tired of waiting.

Your elevation will come from God.

First Samuel 2:7 (NLT) says, “The Lord makes some poor and others rich; he brings some down and lifts others up.”

You may not be able to see what God is doing right now, but that does not mean nothing is happening. This season may look very different from what you expected. It may even feel longer than you ever imagined it would. But you can still trust the One who sees the whole road when you can only see the few steps in front of you.

Take God at His Word. Surrender your way for His Way. Let Him work on what needs to be worked on in you, and let Him handle what is beyond your reach. You don’t need a behind-the-scenes view of everything God is doing. You need to know that He is God, that He is faithful, and that He knows exactly where He is taking you.  ■
