Protecting Your Family from Contention

Proverbs 21:9 (NLT)
“It’s better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home.”

It’s no secret that single mothers have a lot to juggle, and they’re on the grind every single day. The pressures of life can sometimes seem overwhelming, and the thought of having a spouse to share the load is a comforting one. But then you might be thinking, “With all I’ve got going on, where would he even fit?” You’re hearing about being spiritually prepared for marriage, and it might seem like another layer on top of all you’re balancing. Everything seems to be pulling on you, and it can feel like you’re not really moving forward. That frustration can weigh you down, and it might be affecting your home in ways you don’t even realize.

God’s Will Brings Direction and Clarity

When we talk about knowing God’s Will, it’s not just about finding the right decisions or choices to make in individual situations. It’s about understanding God’s heart, His plans for us, and the wisdom He offers in His Word to navigate life. For single mothers, having a clear understanding of God’s Will is the glue. It’s that stabilizing force that holds everything together, especially when life feels overwhelming.

Jesus Christ’s declaration written in John 10:10 (NKJV) tells us, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have [it] more abundantly.” This is God’s Will for our lives; He wants us to live a more than abundant life. If we’re unclear or unsure about this, we will leave a space for strife and contention to occupy. To avoid this, our thoughts about God and what He desires for us needs to change. Rather than doubt, we must allow the hope we have in Christ to set the atmosphere in our homes. We don’t have to know all the promises of God’s Word. We simply need to cling to this one truth: God wants the best for us, and He will always guide us to it.

God’s Will Brings Peace

There’s no getting around the truth that God wants us to be spiritually prepared when it comes to partnering in marriage. That’s not a burden; it’s a privilege. It’s not difficult. In Matthew 11:29-30 (NLT), Jesus Christ invites us: Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” This is a truth we need to hold close every single day. Our precious and powerful Savior promises to carry the load. Our job is to let him—by learning more about him and allowing him to shape us.

God’s asking us to make this kind of practice second nature, woven into everything we do, so we’re steady in both heart and mind. This way, we’re already prepared to guard against contention and strife, even before a spouse enters the picture.

Conflict is inevitable in any home but knowing that God’s Will for your family is all about peace and love can help bring things back to harmony, even when tensions get high. It’s so easy to get caught up in worry or frustration, but when you really understand God’s heart, you realize He’s all about peace, not chaos, for your home. And that knowledge gives you the strength to trust that He’s working, even when things are far from perfect.

A Spirit of Prayer and Dependence on God

A peaceful home is built on the peace of God. Single mothers face their own set of challenges, but when you lean into prayer and trust in God’s strength, you’re opening the door for His peace to settle over your family life.

Each of us has the ability to create an atmosphere of prayer and dependence on God within our homes. When we intentionally invite His presence into our space through prayer, we open the door for His peace to take root and dwell there. It’s not about perfection, but about creating a space where God’s peace is invited to move freely. And when anyone enters, they can immediately feel that your home is a place where God’s peace reigns—where calm, comfort, and His presence are tangible. It becomes a sanctuary not just for you, but for your kids and anyone who walks through the door.

In the midst of life’s chaos, the peace of God is a refuge that can transform our homes, hearts, and relationships. As single mothers, it may feel like there’s no room for anything else in your already full life, but by focusing on God’s Will and leaning fully on His peace, you are building a foundation for greater fulfillment and happiness in life. It’s not about doing everything perfectly; it’s about trusting in God’s strength, seeking His presence, and creating an atmosphere where His peace can thrive. With His guidance, you can guard your home against contention and cultivate a space of love, stability, and harmony for yourself and your family. God’s peace is something you can experience right now, right where you are. Trust Him, praying continually, and trust that His peace will transform your life and your home into a sanctuary of His grace and love. ■
