One Touch from God

One of my most fond memories from childhood is that of my big sister singing me to sleep. I would ask her to sing to me almost every night. Seven years my senior, I’m sure she had other things she’d rather be doing than singing the same song over and over until I fell asleep, but she obliged me many nights. Now that I’m older, I know it was God’s touch, soothing my soul through her voice.

As fully-grown adults, all of us should look for God’s loving touch. He loves us so much and the delight of His heart is to spend time with us. As a child, I was very nervous and stressed out about one thing or another. I had a hard time falling asleep, and I needed something calming. We never stop needing to be soothed by the Father’s touch, and nothing can ease our souls the way He can. As adults, we become so consumed with the worries of our daily lives, that we forget to lean on God, but He is the One that makes our lives work. He reminds us in Romans 8:28(NLT), “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

In Proverbs 3:5, He tells us to trust in Him with all our hearts, and not to lean on our own understanding. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t use our intellect to help us in life. It means that whatever we face, we can and should invite God into the middle of it. We should seek His counsel and not make hasty decisions until we hear His directives. He loves helping us.

Our own understanding is limited. We don’t see what God sees, we don’t know what He knows, and we can’t make the crooked paths straight, but He knows exactly how to do this. So, He tells us to lean on Him totally and completely, because our trust builds intimacy in our relationship with Him.

The soothing words of Song of Solomon 2:11-12(NLT) says, “Look, the winter is past, and the rains are over and gone. The flowers are springing up, the season of singing birds has come, and the cooing of turtledoves fills the air. The fig trees are forming young fruit, and the fragrant grapevines are blossoming. Rise up, my darling! Come away with me, my fair one!” This passage is so lovely! It gives hope to the hopeless, and it is filled with so much promise. God’s Word will do this for us every time.

When we hear this beautiful passage, we may think of a couple being in love, but in truth, this is the intense passion that our Heavenly Father has for His children. He has given us the marital relationship to teach us about the unity and intimacy He desires with all of us. God’s touch is the warm embrace from a child, a loving kiss from a devoted spouse or even a sweet compliment from a stranger. All of us should embrace these tender delights because they show us the heart of God for us. More importantly, they should inspire us to let His love work through us to bless others. Then, they too will know that all it takes is one touch from God, and it will make the greatest difference in their lives. ■
