The Crown of a Worthy Woman

Proverbs 12:4(NLT), “A worthy wife is a crown for her husband, but a disgraceful woman is like cancer in his bones.”

The biblical branding of a “Virtuous Woman” is so popular now that we see it labeled on tags, cups, and other merchandise. It’s stamped across tee-shirts or sweatshirts as a catchy phrase, and worn by some women, saved or not, who either do not know God’s standard or they’re not interested in following it. Proverbs 31:10 asks the question, “Who can find a virtuous woman?” It’s amazing to think that thousands of years ago, they were asking this question. It was just as rare to find a virtuous woman back then as it is today. That’s saying a lot, because we’re currently living in a society where “anything goes.” It seems she’s more difficult to find today than any other time, but God doesn’t change, and His Word doesn’t change. A virtuous woman is His standard, and we must do all we can to achieve it.

Proverbs 31:10 also says about a virtuous woman, that her price is far above rubies. In other words, she is an extremely priceless treasure, and all those who know her see her this way. Many of us look at this as being an unattainable standard, one that we couldn’t measure up to, especially as it relates to virginhood. Well, being a virgin is just one aspect of virtuousness; there are many others. Wisdom and grace are a virtuous woman’s strength. Love, power, and self-discipline are evident in her character and spirit. She’s industrious and her confidence is wholeheartedly in the Lord. She’s trustworthy and knows how to be discreet. She can be trusted by her husband to always protect his interest.

Heavenly Father makes it clear that not only is this the kind of woman that every wife should aspire to be, but every man should make it his business to choose a woman like this as his wife. God said in Malachi 3:6, “For I am the LORD, I change not.” For some reason, many of us have gotten it into our heads that God vacillates from His Word and that He will not hold us to His standard, but this isn’t true. He knows that we are not perfect, but His Will and requirement is that we allow ourselves to be perfected in Christ moment by moment. We cannot be the same women we used to be. Through the Apostle Peter, God commands us in 2Peter 3:18(NLT), “Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” We must be dedicated to being better today than we were yesterday, and we can achieve this if we are committed to follow and grow in Christ.

If you have prayer requests that haven’t yet manifested; if you are still waiting to cross paths with your future husband, consider that there may be some aspect of virtuous womanhood that you need to strengthen. It may be the key that opens the door to all that you’ve desired. Increase your commitment to study God’s Word, to pray and commune with Him more frequently, and to align yourself more closely to the example of Christ. Ask God to show you what He requires of you. Be humble before Him and be patient with yourself as He leads you through the Spirit of Jesus Christ to wear the crown of a worthy woman.■
