I attended a symposium a few months back, and the speaker was extremely knowledgeable. I had been excited to attend because it would cover an aspect of relationships that has been problematic for many people for quite a long time. As it began, it was clear to me that it was not going to be what I expected. The speaker repeatedly used charts and statistics that were completely over my head. For the first fifteen or so minutes, I tried my best to hang onto his every word, but it just wasn’t going to happen. I lost interest, and after about an hour, I was so bored that I fought to keep my eyes open. Relieved when his segment was finally over, I marveled at those who did hang onto his every word and actually understood him. Life presents us with many opportunities for spiritual and personal growth. However, when we lose interest in something, or we never had it to begin with, even if it’s a profound, life-changing piece of truth, our disinterest may cause us to miss it.
Hebrews 4:12(NLT) tells us, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” God’s Word is life to us, and it is so sharp and on point that it slices and dices even things that seem inseparable. His Word discerns right from wrong, and it will put a beaming light on those things that we want kept secret, and it will expose them. All of us have sins that we try to keep in the dark, so that no one knows. We even convince ourselves that God doesn’t see this stuff, but He sees everything, and in His Word, He calls it out.
2Peter 1:3(NLT) says, “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.” Through the divinity of God’s brilliance, perfection, and power, He has engineered us in such a way that we have all it takes to live a full and Godly existence. Through His matchless Word and through His Holy Spirit that indwells us, we can know God intimately as we grow more and more in the knowledge of His truth. This is what He wants for us, and our great desire and continual prayer should be to gain understanding of what He’s revealing in His Word. When we have understanding, it can bring God’s healing, freedom, and deliverance in any aspect of our lives.
When it comes to following the example of Christ and living a life that is pleasing to Him and fulfilling to us as well, God didn’t leave any subject uncovered in His Word. And not only this, He has placed His Holy Spirit within us, and the Spirit is our teacher, friend, comforter, and guide. The Apostle John said in 1John 2:27(NLT), “But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.” The Holy Spirit will teach us and help us understand God’s Word, but he will not do this without our invitation and cooperation.
When I attended the symposium that day, I had ears to hear, but my understanding was unfruitful. The speaker was informative, knowledgeable, and prepared, but he taught on a level that was beyond my comprehension, and this caused me to lose interest. As believers and followers of Christ, we should know that God’s Word is never beyond our comprehension, because the teacher lives within. We should never let it be said that we’re just not that interested when it comes to the scriptures. The psalmist tells us in Psalm 138:2 that God has elevated His Word above His name. It’s His Word that causes us to be blessed, and when we neglect it, we’re neglecting Him. That’s a very dangerous move, so let’s never allow that to happen. Instead, let’s be attentive to grow in the Spirit and pray for more wisdom, understanding, and a greater passion for God’s truth.■
