Are the Two of You a Good Fit?

2Corinthians 6:14 (ESV)
“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?”

Unbelievers are those that do not believe in God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our blessed Redeemer said in John 16:9(NLT), The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.” Those that refuse to believe in Jesus Christ do not belong to him. They will not enjoy the inheritance that God has for His children, and they are not a part of His Kingdom. Our Heavenly Father commands us not to be unequally yoked with them. To be yoked to something or someone is to be tightly joined or bonded together with them in a purpose or union. Neglecting to heed God’s Word about this will be especially taxing on our lives. It’s a mistake and a betrayal of His truth and commandment that we live holy before Him.

When we give over our lives to God through Jesus Christ, they become joined to Him. He is holy and the communion we share with God is holy. 1Thessalonians 5:5(NLT) tells us, For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night.” As God’s children of the light, He wants us to fellowship with light, and light does not yoke with darkness, it dispels it.

It’s kind of hard to know right off the bat whether a new person you’re dating is of the light. We’ve probably heard a dozen different stories from some of our friends. They’ve been on a few dates with a guy and was ready to hit delete on getting to know him, only to find out that he wasn’t so bad after all. The thing to remember is that darkness can counterfeit the light and trick us into believing it’s something it’s not. Not only must we ask ourselves if this man is a good fit for our continued journey in Christ, but we absolutely must hear from God that this is the case. So, wisdom dictates that we need to get God’s greenlight on anyone new. This is the best move we can make for our lives.

If the man’s name isn’t written in God’s Book of Life, no amount of phone conversations, texts, or one-on-one time with him is going to make the relationship something it can never be. We need to settle it in our minds that no matter who we meet or decide to get to know, if God is not in it, it’s not worth it. As single women that desire marriage, we must be sold-out in our devotion

Ephesians 1:3-5, 11(NLT) tells us, 3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. 4 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. 11 Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.”

We’re not here on this planet to do whatever we want to do. God predestined us even before He laid the foundation of the world. He has a specific plan and purpose for our lives, and as His children, we should understand that we don’t have time to play around. He tells us in Proverbs 19:21(NLT), You can make many plans, but the LORD’s purpose will prevail.” Our plans for marriage must be aligned with God’s Will. We must give every detail of them over to Him and follow His leadership and direction. This is the way to make sure that dating doesn’t become a trap to move us further away from all that God has in store for our lives.■
