God Won’t Let You Slip

When Life Feels Unsteady, God Holds You Steady

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us that there is a season for everything, and that includes the seasons we walk through in life. Unfortunately, not all of them are easy. Some seasons can leave you feeling as though the ground beneath your feet is shifting. You wake up each morning carrying concerns that never seem to leave your mind. Bills need to be paid. Relationships are strained. Your body isn’t feeling its best. You pray, trust God, and try to keep moving forward, but the weariness lingers. It’s not the kind of tired that sleep can fix. It’s the kind that settles deep within your soul.

During seasons like these, fear often tries to find a voice. What if I can’t handle this? What if everything falls apart? What if I fail? What if I make the wrong decision? What if I don’t have the strength for what lies ahead? These questions can feel even heavier when you’re not only concerned about yourself. You have people you love. People who depend on you. People you want to protect, support, and encourage. And sometimes the pressure of trying to stay strong for everyone else can make you feel even more unsteady.

You know God is there and that He isn’t far away. Yet when life gets really hard, you long for someone to see about you. You want to feel that reassuring hand on your shoulder. You want the comfort of knowing that someone is standing with you, fiercely loyal and unshakably committed. You want the assurance that even if you’re standing at the edge, you won’t slip.

Sometimes life isn’t easy. No matter how much you try to take hold of it and steer it in a different direction, it can seem unyielding. Yet while Hebrews 13:8 tells us that God never changes, Lamentations 3:23 reminds us that His mercies are new every morning. Our Heavenly Father is continually revealing fresh expressions of His power, love, and faithfulness. And though life may seem unyielding, it always yields to its Creator.

This is one of the extraordinary privileges of being in Christ. Colossians 1:16-17 tells us that all things were created through Him and for Him, and that He holds all creation together. If Christ has the power to sustain the universe, which He does, He certainly has the power to sustain us. God won’t let us slip, and life yields when we are aligned with His Will and walking by faith in Him.

As believers saved by the blood of the lamb, we are in Christ. Trusting this truth brings stability to our lives. We live by His authority and strength, not merely our own. Philippians 4:13 (NLT) affirms for us, “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” This is part of our inheritance as children of the Most High God.

Romans 8:14-17 declares, “14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” 16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.”

His plan was never for us to remain the same from one day to the next. We’ve been given access to every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3). God didn’t give us this wealth of spiritual strength and provision so we could live defeated. His desire is for us to grow in Christ, to understand who we are in Him, and to become more like Him with each passing day.

The enemy knows this too. That’s why he works to distract, to weigh us down, and to wear us out—so we forget who we are.

The one constant about seasons is that we’re always being prepared for the next one. That truth doesn’t change. When we’re exhausted, our internal reservoir runs low, and it can skew the way we see ourselves and even the way we see God. It affects our faith more than we realize.

And this is why it becomes dangerous, because there are some fundamentals of faith that cannot be bypassed. One of the most important is this: God is our sufficiency. That truth cannot be challenged.

Our Heavenly Father knows we need strength for the journey, and no one can do for us what He can do. So He will not allow us to depend on people in a way that replaces Him. Even the thought that a human can fully satisfy what is aching within us will weaken our dependence on the Father and dull our trust in Him.

Instability can’t be made stable by placing another human being in the place of Christ. We have to renew our minds in God’s Word so we’re anchored in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Life will let us down at times, that’s a fact. And yes, God will often send someone to walk with us—He is loving and kind in that way. But we also have a responsibility as believers to trust that God will take care of our needs. When walking with Him daily becomes our greatest joy, our souls are replenished. We begin to rest in His care, trust in His provision, and find security in His presence. And that’s when we can confidently and joyfully proclaim that the Lord is our strength, and He won’t let us slip. ■
