Isaiah 55:8-9 Bible verse over a radiant mountain landscape illustrating God's higher ways and wisdom.

Only Part of the Whole Picture

God Sees What We Cannot Yet See

1 Corinthians 13:9 (NLT) says, “Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture!”

When We Want Something Badly

Have you ever looked back on a decision and thought, If I knew then what I know now, I would’ve done things very differently? I think all of us have. The truth is, we make decisions every day without knowing how they’ll affect our future. We only see what’s right in front of us, but God sees where every choice leads. This is one of the reasons it’s so important to stop leaning on our understanding and allow Him to direct our paths.

I think about the conversations I’ve had with Christian women who are single and dating. More than once, I’ve heard someone say, “If I could do it all over again, I would’ve slowed things down. I rushed because I wanted the relationship to work.” That statement says a lot. When we want something badly enough, it’s easy to become focused on getting the thing we’ve prayed for instead of paying attention to how we’re getting there. We can become so afraid of losing the opportunity that we stop listening as closely to God as we once did. The thought of walking away feels harder than compromising a little here and there.

But that’s exactly where our limited perspective can get us into trouble.

God’s Ways Are Higher

God sees what we cannot. He knows that sometimes the relationships we choose will not produce fruit, but exactly the opposite. He sees how we can become locked into fantasy rather than faith, and how we become obsessed with the promise of what we hope it will be rather than seeing reality. Best believe, He sees consequences we never considered.

That’s one of the reasons we have to trust Him and let Him lead always. That’s one of the reasons God asks us to trust Him. We don’t always understand why He tells us to wait, walk away, or obey. But He sees the whole picture while we only see the part that’s right in front of us.

When God Says, “Trust Me”

Faith doesn’t require us to understand everything God is doing. It requires us to trust that He is the only One who knows best. Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT) reminds us, “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. There will be times when God’s instructions don’t make sense to us because we’re only looking at what’s in front of us. He is looking far beyond this moment. He sees what our choices are producing long before we do.

That doesn’t mean God is trying to keep us from something good. Quite the opposite. Psalm 84:11 (NLT) says, “For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right. His boundaries aren’t meant to rob us of joy. They’re there to protect us, strengthen our faith, and keep us walking in His Will. What feels good today isn’t always what will be good for us tomorrow, but as Romans 8:28 reminds us, God has never stopped working for our good.

None of us sees the whole picture. We’ve all made decisions we wish we could take back because we didn’t know then what we know now. The good news is that we don’t have to figure life out on our own. As we continue walking with Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit helps us grow in wisdom, discernment, and trust. We may only see part of the whole picture, but we can rest in the One who sees it all. ■
