A beautiful woman praying with the words of Proverbs 4:23 in the background

God Wants Your Heart First

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT):
“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”

Most people deeply desire love. It’s wired into us. But when love doesn’t show up on our timeline, it can feel confusing, even painful. For some, the issue isn’t just timing—it’s what’s going on beneath the surface. Some of us carry silent wounds—childhood hurt, relational scars, or distance from family—and we wonder why love feels so hard. These aren’t signs of failure; they’re signs that our hearts need tending. And when we allow God’s Word to speak into those places, real healing and deeper connection become possible.

As daughters and sons of God, most of us already know that this Christian walk takes work—daily work. Life will try to stain your heart, clutter your mind, and harden you with disappointment. That’s why Proverbs 4:23 doesn’t suggest it—it commands it: “Guard your heart above all else…” This isn’t a casual move. It’s not one we can practice whenever we feel it’s convenient. It has to be done with intentional, focused care—because love that endures, love that reflects Christ, comes from a heart that’s being nurtured, not neglected when healing gets hard.

So what happens when things don’t go your way? When that prayer hasn’t been answered, the door doesn’t open, or that relationship that you thought was the “one” falls through? Do you shut down? Do you get snappy and pull away from people? Do you hold on to grudges like they protect you? We have to be real with ourselves and answer questions like these honestly. It’s not about blame—it’s about awareness. It’s a heart check. Because the moment you recognize patterns that are hurting you or keeping you stuck, that’s the moment God invites you to shift. Not in your own strength, but through His grace.

There are so many of God’s daughters asking Him to send a good man—a loving man, someone who’ll treat them right. But here’s something we can’t ignore: you attract what’s flowing from your heart. If you’re praying for something good and godly, your heart has to be in position to receive it and reflect it. This isn’t just about what you want—it’s about what you’re actually ready for.

God makes a powerful promise in Ezekiel 36:26-27 (NLT): “And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.” He doesn’t run out of blessings. He’s not holding back from you out of punishment or delay. But Ezekiel reminds us that back then, just like now, people missed out on His best—not because He changed, but because their hearts did. Their desire for Him faded. They started doing life on their own terms and tuning out His truth. And yet, even then, God offered a reset. Let me give you something brand new. Let me make your heart soft again. He still offers that today—for anyone who’s willing to trust Him fully.

Psalm 51:10 (ESV) says it straight from the soul: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Only our merciful, gracious, and all-powerful God can offer a blessing this enormous—it’s a lifeline for us. Especially for women who’ve been lied to, betrayed, abandoned, or overlooked. Some of us have learned to guard our hearts so tightly that even God has to knock a few times before we let Him in.

When you’ve been hurt by people who had access to your heart and didn’t handle it well, it’s easy to think the damage is permanent. That love isn’t safe anymore. That maybe it’s just not meant for you. But none of that is true.

The moment you said yes to Jesus, God gave you access to something powerful—His Holy Spirit. And the Spirit doesn’t barge in. He waits. He whispers. He nudges you toward wholeness. He shows you what needs healing and helps you face it without shame. He corrects, yes—but He comforts too.

Never forget this: God wants your heart first. Before the breakthrough, and before the relationship. Because only His love can make it new again. The kind of love you’re praying for needs a healed and responsive heart—not one guarded by fear or buried under pain. So don’t rush it. Surrender to God and let Him do the work in your soul first, because when your heart is whole, real love has room to flourish.■
