“For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.”
— Colossians 3:3 (NLT)
Discovering Your True Identity in Christ
Somewhere along the way, many of us picked up labels that don’t belong to us. Maybe you’ve been called “not enough,” “too much,” “damaged,” or “ordinary.” And without realizing it, we wear those words like a name tag stamped across our chest. But God never asked you to define yourself by other people’s opinions or your past mistakes. Your true identity was spoken long before you ever showed up here, and it’s found in Christ alone.
In Colossians 3:3 (NLT), Paul said it straight: “For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.” That means your old self — with its shame, failures, and broken pieces — no longer gets to be the loudest voice in the room. The truest thing about you isn’t where you came from, what you’ve been through, or even what you think of yourself. The truest thing about you is what God says about you.
The Battle Over Your Name
Here’s the truth: the enemy has always been after your identity. From the very beginning in the garden, the serpent tried to twist God’s words to make Adam and Eve doubt what God had said. In Matthew 4:3 (NLT), we see the same strategy in the wilderness with Jesus. After forty days of fasting, Satan came at Him with this attack: “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” See that? If he can get you to doubt who you are in God, he can get you to live beneath your calling.
But Jesus didn’t entertain it. He didn’t scramble to defend Himself or prove anything. Matthew 4:4 (NLT) shows us that He answered with the Word, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” That wasn’t just about quoting verses; it was about standing firm in what His Father already declared. You and I must have that same stance. Because life will test you, people will label you, and pain will try to redefine you. But God already named you His child, chosen, forgiven, redeemed. You don’t have to prove it. You just have to walk in it.
Breaking Free From False Labels
Some of us are so used to defining ourselves by trauma, achievements, or even other people’s approval, that we don’t know who we are without it. But Scripture dismantles all of that: “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT).
That new identity doesn’t mean you ignore your past — it means your past no longer owns you. You’re not the divorce, the addiction, the failure, or the rejection. You’re not even the applause or the success. Because if your identity is built on anything other than Christ, it will crumble. But when it’s rooted in Him, it becomes unshakable.
Living From Your True Identity
The question then becomes: how do you live from your true identity in Christ, instead of slipping back into the old labels? In Colossians 3:10 (NLT), Paul gives us the blueprint: “Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.” It’s not automatic — it’s a daily choice. Just like you put on clothes every morning, you’ve got to “put on” the truth of who you are in Christ.
That means opening the Word and letting God tell you who you are before the world tries to. It means praying like someone who actually believes God is listening. It means walking into rooms not with arrogance, but with quiet confidence, because you know you’re carrying His Spirit within you. And it means when the lies creep back in — “you’re not enough” — you shut them down with Scripture: “No, I am God’s masterpiece” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT). You can be who God says you can be, you can have what He says you can have, and you can do all the good things He’s planned for you to do. You can walk in your freedom in Christ daily.
Freedom in Christ
Finding your identity in Christ isn’t just about self-esteem or positive thinking—it’s about transformation. It’s about believing God’s truth and anchoring yourself in the One who never changes. Hebrews 13:8 (NLT) says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” If He never changes, then who He says you are will never change either.
Your true identity is sealed in Christ. It’s not up for grabs. And when your soul finally says yes to that truth, you stop living like a victim of circumstance and your life becomes a testimony of the freedom and security found only in Christ.
Rooted and Secure in Christ
That’s the call. Don’t just find your identity in Christ—live from it. Let it shape the way you think, speak, and move through this world. Because the world doesn’t need another echo of culture; it needs the sound of the real you, rooted and alive in Him. When you stand in who God says you are, you shine a light that can’t be dimmed, and you carry a freedom that can’t be faked. That’s when your life becomes more than survival—it becomes a living testimony of Christ within you.
