God’s Shield of Love

When Marriage Feels Like the Final Destination

For many single women, marriage feels like the final destination—the ultimate goal and purpose in life. That’s why some lose a part of themselves once they’ve slipped on the ring or walked down the aisle with their “finally-forever” husband. Finally, somebody noticed me. Finally, I’ve got a man. Finally, I’m married.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the relief in a woman’s voice after that first phone call with “the one”—the man who asked for her number and actually followed up. In that moment, it feels like proof that maybe all isn’t lost when it comes to love and relationships. And before that call? Silence. Long seasons where that cell phone doesn’t ring and no one pursues your heart. Those gaps can feel unbearable, and that’s for real. It’s like love will never come, and it’s heartbreaking. Months turn into years, and marriage can seem like it’s on a shelf too high to reach. But here’s the truth that has to marinate in our hearts: God knows how to bless His daughters.

God Is Our True Source of Fulfillment

Forever is how long you hope your marriage will last. But if your hope rests only in a man, you’ll be disappointed. Husbands, no matter how wonderful, can’t be everything to their spouses, even when they try their best. Followers of Christ must understand this—only God is our constant shield of protection, our provider, our sufficiency in every way. He alone surrounds us with His shield of love. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT) calls us to lean into this reality: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Trusting God is the only place true fulfillment rests, and when our hearts are rooted in Him, our faith deepens and overflows into every relationship we have.

Becoming a Woman Rooted in Christ’s Love

This is the kind of faith that shapes us into Ephesians 5 women—wives who submit to their husbands as to the Lord, and husbands who love their wives as Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:22-25, NLT). But here’s the key: a Godly woman keeps Christ at the center of her heart first. She won’t move without seeking Him. She knows how to stay pliable in His hands, willing to change when He calls, humble enough to receive correction, and slow to anger when she doesn’t get her way. That’s not weakness—it’s strength born of love.

Letting Go of Control and Trusting God’s Best

The challenge for many women today is that their relationship with God hasn’t been deeply rooted in His love, so the idea of submission can feel more like a burden to them than a blessing. When we try to hold onto control, pride and stubbornness can quietly block the very blessings God desires to pour out. But when we release our grip and seek Him first—not rushing ahead, but waiting patiently for His direction—we find ourselves moving out of frustration and into the fullness of His best.

Our Heavenly Father wants us to thrive. He wants our marriages, our singleness, and our whole lives to be healthy and fruitful. And His shield of love surrounds us, not only to protect us, but to remind us that every blessing flows from Him.

Reflection & Soul Work

  • Where have you been looking to people or relationships for the kind of security only God can provide?
  • Read Psalm 5:12 (NLT) and write it in your journal. How does knowing God surrounds you with His shield of love change how you see your singleness or your marriage?
  • This week, when you’re tempted to depend on someone else for validation, pause and declare: “Lord, You are my shield of love. I trust You first.”

Prayer

Dear Father God,

Thank You for surrounding me with Your shield of love. Forgive me for the times I’ve looked to people or relationships to meet needs that only You can fill. Teach me to root my heart in You first, so that my faith grows strong and my love overflows into every part of my life. Help me to trust You with my future, my relationships, and my whole self, knowing You are faithful and good. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, I pray, amen. ■
