How to Discern True Blessings from Counterfeits

Sheri thought she had it all figured out. The man she believed was “the one” was handsome, charming, ambitious—and when he said he wanted to marry her, it felt like a dream finally coming true. Friends envied her, family congratulated her, and even her own heart raced with excitement. Everything looked perfect…until cracks started appearing. The conversations she ignored, the subtle warning signs she brushed off, the pieces that didn’t quite fit—all revealed a reality that looked nothing like the blessing she thought she was stepping into.

Proverbs 14:12 (NLT) says, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” Beautiful sisters, just because it looks good doesn’t mean it is good. Your eyes can only see what’s right in front of you, but God—you already know—He sees the whole picture. He knows every move you’re going to make before you even think it. That’s why discernment isn’t optional—it’s survival.

The Danger of Surface Appearances

Too often we’re tempted to chase what sparkles: the guy with the title, the job with all the flashy perks, the house that looks perfect online. But Jesus calls us to look deeper—to pray, to wait, to not be satisfied with surface blessings that could be traps in disguise. God wants us to make decisions from a place of wisdom and peace, not attraction or pressure, because the fallout of being fooled can hit hard—emotionally, financially, and spiritually.

God doesn’t just want you to avoid trouble—He wants you to walk in peace and confidence when you say yes to something. That means asking the hard questions, even when everyone else is hyped about the situation. It means slowing down your heart and your decision-making to check the alignment: Does this match God’s Word? Does it feel right in my spirit? Am I being influenced by fear, pride, or desire for approval?

Discernment in Relationships

When it comes to relationships, especially the ones you hope will lead to marriage, discernment is everything. Don’t be fooled by charm, good looks, or what appears to be success. A man can have all the right things on the outside—title, car, manners—but if the fruit of his heart isn’t right, his actions won’t line up with God’s plan for you. Proverbs 31:30 reminds us, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.” And that same principle applies to men and every blessing God wants to give you.

Applying Wisdom to Life’s Opportunities

This isn’t just about people, either. Life will tempt you with opportunities that look designer, polished, and high-end, but don’t carry the integrity God requires. That flashy new job? That “perfect” investment? That project that looks like a shortcut to success? If it’s not aligned with God’s Will, it could cost more than you think. Being discerning means stepping back, praying, and asking God to show you what’s real, what’s safe, and what will last.

Here’s the truth: discernment protects your heart, your future, and your peace. It doesn’t make you weak—it makes you wise. And wisdom always trumps impulsive decisions. Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT) says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” When you pause, pray, and ask God to guide your steps, you position yourself to recognize what’s truly from Him and what’s a counterfeit blessing. That patience and spiritual awareness will save you from regret and keep your life on a path that honors God. ■
