You Are Not Fighting Alone

For a woman who has been single much longer than she ever thought, reminders that we’re unmarried come from many places. Even filling out a job application and checking that single status once again can bring a reminder we could do without. It just doesn’t seem right. You might ask yourself, Will this part of my life ever change? Sure, it stings for the moment, but that doubtful feeling that maybe you’ll never get married can pass as quickly as it comes. We do ourselves a favor when we let it skip right on past us and refuse to let it take our hopes captive.

Whether you’re thinking for two—pondering what you’ll make for dinner when you get home—or you’re working on those insecurities, preparing yourself so that you don’t carry the wounds of the past into a future relationship, God’s got you either way. Your responsibility is to trust Him no matter what season of life you’re in. Philippians 4:12 (NLT) says, “I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.” Paul had learned something we have to learn too: our trust in God cannot depend upon the season we happen to be in.

We all go through seasons when things are going great in our lives. No issues on the job, family is good, bills are being paid on time, and some of our prayers are even being answered. But when things begin to come apart, challenges seem to be at every corner, and we’re not hearing God the way we used to, this is often when the desire for companionship becomes stronger. We want someone to walk beside us through the hard times. We want someone to talk to at the end of the day. We want somebody there. And there is nothing wrong with desiring companionship. But even when that feeling hits strong, we still have to ask ourselves, Am I going to trust God in this moment?

Philippians 4:6 (NLT) says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done.” God doesn’t expect us to pretend those moments of doubt never come. His Word tells us what to do when they do. Pray. Tell Him what you need. Thank Him for what He has already done. There is something that happens when we pray and give thanks. Once we have gotten it off our shoulders and laid it at His feet, we have to trust Him with the outcome. That doesn’t mean the desire disappears or that we suddenly stop caring about whether marriage will ever happen. It means we refuse to allow what we don’t have to become greater in our hearts than the God we already have.

Most of us have come to realize that moments of doubt come and go. What matters is what we do when those moments come. The question we have to sit with is this: Do I trust God only when He gives me what I want? It’s true, single seasons last longer than some of us would like. It’s also true that those seasons sometimes have the company of heartbreak and disappointment. Life is full of unpredictable situations, but we can’t allow them to determine how we honor and love God. Mark 12:30 (NLT) says, “And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” Jesus wasn’t describing a love for God that depends upon everything in our lives going the way we hoped. We are to love Him with our entire being. That must remain the focus in every season we find ourselves in.

Anchor yourself in Christ. Trust God with the season you’re in, even when you don’t understand what He is doing. Yes, being single can sometimes feel like a battle, but you’re not fighting it alone. God is with you in every situation and in every season. He is still God whether the answer comes today, tomorrow, or not in the way you expected. We simply can’t control every outcome, but we can decide whether we will continue trusting God when the outcome is not ours to control. And when we understand what a privilege it is to belong to Him, we can rest in the truth that He knows what we cannot see, He loves us, and He will remain faithful. ■
