Walk Uprightly Before Your Husband

A woman’s desire to partner with a good and Godly man is a very natural desire. It came standard with our packaging. It’s a desire that the Lord placed in our hearts, so we should never feel anything but optimistic and hopeful when it comes to marital partnering. We shouldn’t allow the negatives of doubt and anxiety to enter our minds and hearts. Our faith must remain anchored in God, because He keeps His promises, He’s faithful to His Word, and He desires our happiness more than we could ever possibly desire it for ourselves.

Waiting for the blessing of meeting and partnering with the person God has ordained for us comes with all kinds of spiritual lessons that we must learn. Patience is one of those lessons, and we must understand this as young followers of Christ and daughters of God. We might see some of our friends doing things and behaving poorly. They are not living righteously before God, yet they don’t seem to be facing the consequences of their poor choices and behavior. It makes you question what is going on, because you know they are doing wrong, yet they seem to be having the time of their lives, meeting guys left and right, and not being interested in following God’s standards.

The psalmist, Asaph, felt similar to this and wrote about it in Psalm 73:3-5(The Message): “No doubt about it! God is good—good to good people, good to the good-hearted. But I nearly missed it, missed seeing his goodness. I was looking the other way, looking up to the people at the top, envying the wicked who have it made, who have nothing to worry about, not a care in the whole wide world.” The psalmist admits that he almost missed what God had for him because he was focused on what others were doing. He thought those individuals had it made, but he soon recognized that God has a plan for our individual lives, and we must follow it. We can’t do what others are doing, because we belong to God’s Kingdom!

As Godly women, we must allow for the possibility that our ministry as wives will require more than we think. It is possible that our husbands will not equal us in spiritual maturity, that they will not have developed and cultivated the kind of intimate walk with the Lord that we have, ourselves. If this is the case, we are required to walk holy before them as God’s daughters. They may not know how to walk on God’s Word with commitment and loyalty, but we can show them by living uprightly before their eyes. If we’re not living right in God’s eyes right now, while we are single and have the time to strengthen ourselves in Him, then we may not have the spiritual strength to resist temptations and help our husbands when we’re married.

In Genesis 2:16-17(NLT), the Lord God warned Adam, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” Eve knew of God’s commandment and chose to ignore it, but the fall of humanity occurred when Adam disobeyed God. A woman doesn’t have seed, only the man does. Sin entered the body of humans through Adam. Imagine if he had rejected the actions of Eve and refused to bow to satan. He could have saved his family and millions of others.

When our future spouses are doing things that we know God has told us not to do, it isn’t a green light to follow behind them. If we are diligent to spiritually prepare now, and be strong for God, we can help prevent a bad outcome in our marriages and other situations through our obedience to God. Understand the awesome privilege and responsibility you have to walk uprightly before Heavenly Father. You are laying up treasures for your future. Now is the time to spiritually prepare for both the blessings and challenges that lie ahead. So, let’s stay in God’s Word, pray without ceasing, and strengthen ourselves in the Spirit. If we are diligent to follow the Holy Spirit’s lead, he will help us become the spouses God has called us to be.■
