Don’t Let Your Emotions Rule

Dear Heavenly Father,

You are full of mercy and grace, and You love to display Your goodness towards us. Thank You for being our rock, shield, and rescue, for You have made us accepted through Jesus Christ, and You protect us from all hurt, harm, and danger. We don’t deserve Your bountiful and amazing blessings, but You give them to us any way. When we trust in You with our whole hearts, You will cause Your goodness and mercy to follow us all the days of our lives. Thank You for making us a part of Your family and for being so kind and compassionate to us. Thank You for saving us through Your Son, Jesus Christ.

As Your children, we have Your nature of love and light. The light of Christ is in us because we gave our lives to You through him. You teach us in John 1:12-13(NLT), “12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.” Jesus Christ gave us the right to become Your children, and because of what he accomplished through his death and resurrection, our human spirits were recreated. They were made brand new through Christ, and now we have received Your righteousness.

You command us in Colossians 3:1(NLT), “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.” Our citizenship is in heaven. It is the place where we were born, because we are Your spiritual children. Our responsibility is to make sure that our hearts and minds match up with our new spiritual nature, which is the nature of Christ. We are to talk like him, share like him, love like him, and have his mind, so that we think and behave like him 24/7. You made us in his image. He is the blueprint for all humanity, but many of us refuse to honor Your commandment and live our lives through Jesus Christ’s example.

In Ephesians 4:26-27(NKJV), You tell us, “Be angry, and do not sin.” do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” Our “old man” nature, which is the nature we had before we gave our lives to Jesus Christ, has a problem with this wisdom from Your Word. Because of the old way that we used to be, we want to react and respond to frustration and confrontational situations with anger. The world teaches us to allow our emotions to govern the way we live, but Your Word teaches us that Jesus Christ is Lord. He is Lord over every aspect of our existences, including our emotions. This means that we must not allow our feelings to rule our actions, instead we must submit our emotions and feelings to You by placing them under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

In our current environment, there’s increased instances of road-rage, physical fights, verbal confrontations and abuse, and other displays of very ugly behaviors. This isn’t okay with You, and there’s a heavy price to pay for this lack of emotional control. One poor decision or wrong choice to get out of pocket with saying the wrong thing at the wrong time can change the course of our lives forever. This is why we must obey Your wisdom in Proverbs 4:23(NLT), and “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”

Father God, please help us to watch what we do, think, and say, and allow the Spirit to guide us in all things. It will not hurt us to keep our mouths shut or walk away from heated situations. Doing so is good judgment, because it pleases You when we have the good sense to let You fight our battles. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, never made an irrational move or decision that would separate him from You. He said in John 8:29(NKJV) “And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”

Jesus Christ never made a move without hearing from You first. He lived this way because he knew that Your way is forever and always the best way. You have given us the responsibility to move and think like Christ, and this is the very best way to live life. Thank You for helping us control our emotions by reminding us to follow the Spirit’s lead in all situations. Thank You for empowering us through Jesus Christ to live a successful life as a believer and thank You for blessing us all the days of our lives. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.■
