Don’t Get Too Comfortable

Remaining Watchful, Grounded in Christ, and Ready for His Return

Life has a funny way of taking a hard left turn when we least expect it. One day everything seems normal, and the next day you’re dealing with something you never saw coming. One phone call, one diagnosis, one financial setback, one unexpected betrayal, and suddenly everything looks different. Most of us have said it at one time or another, “I never thought this could happen to me.” I’ve said it myself. But the truth is that life has no respect of persons. That is why Jesus Christ calls us to live with our hearts anchored in Him rather than in our circumstances. We are living in serious times. Challenges come to all of us, which is why we can’t afford to become spiritually comfortable or careless in our walk with God.

The Apostle Peter warned believers to stay alert because our enemy, the devil, is actively looking for opportunities to attack. 1 Peter 5:8 (NLT) warns, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” If God tells us to stay alert, then we can be sure there is something we need to be paying attention to. He wouldn’t tell us to remain watchful if there were no danger.

Staying alert means we cannot allow ourselves to drift through life disconnected from prayer, disconnected from God’s Word, and disconnected from the voice of the Holy Spirit. The enemy is always looking for opportunities, and he doesn’t play fair. We have to maintain a vibrant and intimate relationship with Jesus. And vigilance about that relationship is required, because the enemy looks for moments when believers become careless, distracted, or overly comfortable in their walk with the Lord.

Yes, Jesus Christ is our strength, our wisdom, our protection, and our source of peace every single day. He’s the One we go to when life falls apart, but He can’t be just that. He has to be so much more. This is why Paul instructed believers in Ephesians 6:11 (NLT), “Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” Standing firm does not mean we never face battles. It means we remain planted in Christ when those battles come. Like a tree planted by the water, believers can remain steady even when storms arise.

One of the enemy’s greatest goals is to weaken our faith. If he can get us doubting God’s goodness, questioning His Word, or trusting our feelings more than His truth, he can begin influencing our thinking in dangerous ways. As the days grow darker, our need for spiritual vigilance grows greater. This does not mean living in fear. It means living with wisdom. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) tells us, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Guarding our hearts is being careful about what we allow to influence us, and staying close to the Lord. The condition of our hearts affects our decisions, our attitudes, and the direction of our lives. When we keep our hearts centered on Christ, we are far less vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes.

The days we are living in should remind us that this is not the time to grow casual about our faith. And the good news is that we do not have to navigate these days alone. Jesus Christ has given us His Spirit, His Word, and His presence. Our responsibility is to remain faithful, attentive, and ready. Let us not become so comfortable with this world that we lose sight of eternity. Instead, may we continue seeking the Lord, strengthening our faith, and keeping our lamps filled with oil as we look forward to the return of our King. ■
