Faith In What God Can Do Through You

Trusting God With Your Future While Serving Him Today

Philippians 4:19 (NLT) says, “And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”

Most believers are familiar with this verse. We’ve quoted it when money was tight, when doors weren’t opening, or when we were facing a situation that seemed bigger than our resources. It reminds us that God is our provider and that we can trust Him to supply what we need.

But sometimes our focus becomes so fixed on what we need God to do for us that we give very little thought to what He wants to do through us.

Many of us spend years pursuing goals, making plans, and praying about the desires of our hearts. There’s nothing wrong with that. God cares about the things that matter to us. But as followers of Jesus Christ, there comes a point where we have to ask a deeper question. Am I simply asking God to bless my plans, or am I allowing Him to direct my life according to His purpose?

The reality is that God never intended for our lives to revolve solely around our own ambitions, achievements, or personal pursuits. He created us for something greater than that. He created us to know Him, to walk with Him, and to participate in the work He desires to accomplish in the earth. When we begin to understand that truth, our perspective starts to change. We stop viewing life only through the lens of what we want God to do for us and begin considering what He may want to do through us.

Jesus Christ gave us the perfect example of what it looks like to live a life surrendered to the Father. Everywhere He went, He was mindful of the needs of others. He taught, served, healed, encouraged, corrected, and gave of Himself continually. His life was never centered on pursuing His own agenda. Instead, He remained focused on the Father’s Will and the people He had been called to serve.

Mark 10:45 (NLT) says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

And that’s something worth thinking about. If the Son of God came to serve, then those of us who follow Him should expect service to be a part of our lives as well. The question is not simply what we hope God will do for us in the future. The question is whether we are allowing Jesus Christ to love, encourage, strengthen, and bless others through us right now.

For single women who desire marriage, this perspective is especially important. It’s easy to spend time praying about the kind of man you hope God will bring into your life. We pray for a man who loves Jesus, treats us well, communicates honestly, leads spiritually, and values commitment. There is nothing wrong with praying for those things. But somewhere along the way, we also have to ask ourselves a different question: Am I becoming the kind of woman who is prepared to steward the blessing I’m asking God for?

Marriage is about so much more than finding the right person. It’s a ministry. And it has a way of revealing what’s already in us. It reveals how we handle disappointment. How we respond when things don’t go our way. Whether we know how to forgive. Whether we’re patient. Whether we’re willing to serve, encourage, communicate, and love when it’s inconvenient.

Those qualities aren’t developed after the wedding ceremony. They’re developed long before it. They’re developed in the everyday moments when nobody is watching. They’re developed as we walk with Jesus Christ, submit ourselves to His Word, and allow Him to shape our character one lesson at a time.

As Proverbs 31:26(NLT) reminds us, “When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.” That kind of wisdom and kindness doesn’t appear overnight. It grows out of a life that has been walking with God for a long time.

The truth is, how we treat people today often reveals more about our readiness for marriage than our relationship status ever will. The opportunities God gives us to serve, encourage, forgive, show grace, and think beyond ourselves are not interruptions to our preparation. In many ways, they are the preparation.

Philippians 4:19 reminds us that God is faithful to supply our needs. We can rest in that promise and trust Him with every area of our lives, including our desire for marriage. But while we are trusting Him to provide, we should also remain surrendered to His Will and attentive to what He desires to accomplish through our lives. Faith is not only believing God for what He can do for you. It is also believing in what He can do through you. As we keep our eyes on Jesus Christ, seek God’s Will, and make ourselves available to serve others, we become vessels through which His love can flow. And whether we are single or married, there is no greater purpose than that. ■
