When You Stop Forcing It
We hear a lot these days about “going after what’s yours.” And while there are times when we absolutely need to take action, pursue something, and do our part, we also have to remember that God is the author of our lives. He is not sitting in heaven trying to figure out what He is going to do with us next. Romans 8:29 (NLT) says, “For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son.” God knew us before we knew ourselves. He already had purpose in mind for our lives. That means we don’t have to live as though everything depends on us making the right move at the right time.
God Knows Where to Place You
God is intentional about where He places us. He can work through our families, our jobs, our relationships, our neighborhoods, and even seasons we never would have chosen for ourselves. That doesn’t mean God caused everything that brought us to where we are, but it does mean our circumstances don’t prevent Him from accomplishing His purpose in us and through us. Sometimes we spend so much energy trying to make something happen that we miss what God is already doing right where we are.
There is a difference between pursuing what God has placed on your heart and forcing something because you are afraid it will not happen otherwise. When we are walking in God’s Will, we can trust Him enough to take the next step without trying to control every step after that.
Let the Holy Spirit Lead You
We are not expected to figure out the whole journey by ourselves. Jesus told His disciples in John 16:13 (NLT), “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.” The Holy Spirit knows how to lead us where God wants us to go. Sometimes the direction will be clear, and sometimes God will simply give us enough light for the next step. Our responsibility is to stay close to Him, listen, obey, and remain in position. Being in position does not mean doing nothing. It means being available and obedient when God says move, and being willing to wait when He says not yet.
Stop Trying to Make It Happen
And what happens when we get off track? What happens when we make a bad decision, take a wrong turn, or simply miss what God was showing us? We can be grateful that our mistakes do not surprise God. Romans 8:28 (NLT) says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” That does not mean everything that happens is good. It means God is able to work through the good, the bad, and the ugly. He can redeem what we thought was wasted and use even our wrong turns to bring us back into His purpose.
The question is not always, “How do I go after what’s mine?” Sometimes the better question is, “God, where do You want me to be, and what do You want me to do right now?” There is a difference between striving to make your life happen and trusting God enough to walk with Him as your life unfolds. We do our part. We pray. We prepare. We obey. We take action when God gives us direction. But we do not have to force doors open, manipulate outcomes, or chase what God has not told us to chase. When we are walking in God’s Will, we can trust that He knows where He is taking us. Our job is to stay in position. ■
