God Always Allows Us to Choose

Realigning Our Hearts with God’s Will

Romans 12:2 (NLT)
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

As children of the Most High God, we are destined to know the truth through His Word. Every circumstance, every lesson in life, can be traced back to an example God already showed us in Scripture. If you want to know the end result of not taking God at His Word—read His Word. You’re still single but believing for marriage, and you’re wondering why it’s taking so long? Go to His Word. You’re struggling to trust His timing and starting to think about taking matters into your own hands? Pause. Wait. And read what God has already said about it.

Abraham and Sarah Chose Their Way, At First

If God tells you that something good is going to happen, trust Him. Numbers 23:19 (NLT) says, “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” That means if God said it, He will do it—no matter how long it takes. His promises never fall to the ground.

But when time starts stretching longer than we expected, impatience can push us into things that only bring pain and regret. We see this clearly in Abraham and Sarah’s story. God promised them a son, but when Sarah didn’t conceive right away, she started reasoning in her own mind. “Maybe this promise will come another way,” she thought. So she told Abraham to sleep with her servant, Hagar—hoping to help God fulfill His Word. But that was never God’s plan. It brought heartache and conflict instead of peace.

Still, God’s promise stood firm. In Genesis 17:15 (NLT), “Then God said to Abraham, ‘Regarding Sarai, your wife—her name will no longer be Sarai. From now on her name will be Sarah.’” God reaffirmed His covenant and restored what impatience had complicated. He reminded them—and us—that His Word doesn’t need our shortcuts. What He speaks, He will bring to pass, but it must happen His way.

When Desire Gets Ahead of Faith

Many times, it’s not that we don’t believe God will do what He promised—it’s that we want to control how and when He does it. That’s where so many of us stumble, especially when it comes to relationships. We pray for a godly spouse but get tired of waiting, so we start entertaining what looks good in the moment. We tell ourselves, “Maybe this is close enough,” or, “I can fix what’s missing later.” But anything born out of impatience will require us to keep it alive through our own strength—and eventually, that wears us down.

Like Sarah, we can end up creating our own version of Ishmael—something birthed from our emotions instead of God’s Spirit. The truth is, God’s blessings don’t need our help, just our obedience. When our desires start to outrun our faith, it’s a sign that we’ve shifted our focus from trusting His hand to following our own heart. And when that happens, we step out of alignment with His Will and into unnecessary struggle.

Walking in Faith, Not Impatience

The beautiful thing about God is that even when we’ve gotten ahead of Him, His grace still reaches for us. He doesn’t abandon us in our detours; He redirects us. Realignment begins when we surrender—not just our plans, but our motives. We have to be honest with ourselves about why we want what we want. Is it because we’re lonely, comparing our lives to others, or afraid of missing out? Or is it because we truly want to walk in the Will of God? When our heart motives are pure, waiting doesn’t feel like punishment—it becomes preparation.

The Promise Still Stands

If you’ve ever made a decision that got ahead of God’s plan, don’t let guilt convince you that you’ve missed your chance. God’s promise for your life still stands. He may have to prune, heal, and redirect you, but His Word never fails. Just like Abraham and Sarah, He can bring forth His promise even after our mistakes—because His covenant is based on His faithfulness, not our perfection.

The same God who brought Sarah laughter in her old age can bring beauty out of your waiting season. Choose to trust Him again. Let go of what you’ve tried to control and allow Him to guide you back to His perfect will. When we choose faith over fear, patience over panic, and obedience over impulse, we position ourselves to receive everything He has in store for us. ■
