Get to Know Him for Yourself

“Sister So-and-so sure can get a prayer through.” I’m sure you’ve heard this spoken of someone that folks consider to have a close walk with Jesus Christ. As a matter a fact, you might be this person, a prayer warrior in the eyes of others. How many times have you run across someone that asks if you will say a word of prayer for them or a loved one? It’s an honor to pray for others, and most of us are quick to say yes, but we should think about something. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the person requesting prayer got to know God intimately for themselves? I think God would rather have every Christian trust in Him to the point where they are confident that He hears them, and will help them in their time of need.

There’s nothing in this universe that would keep a person from getting to know God on a very intimate and personal level if they desired it.  Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ made that available over 2,000 years ago, when He gave his life for us. Romans 8:38 The Message (MSG) tells us, “The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture…None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us.”

We can be so caught up with our routines and rituals, that we forget what’s really important, which is the relationship we have with God through Jesus Christ. We must know Him for ourselves, and we shouldn’t allow anyone to come between us and Him. Through the years, I’ve witnessed and counseled countless women who have allowed their relationship with the man in their lives to take complete control.  Whatever the man wants, he gets – and they will go out of their way to accommodate his wishes, and make whatever sacrifices required to keep him in their lives. It’s easy to become oblivious to the separation created between us and God, when our focus is consumed with keeping another human being comfortable, rather than keeping our relationship with God growing and deepening.

We take on quite a few roles, wife, mother, girlfriend, best friend, confidant, pastor, prayer warrior, and teacher, just to name a few. All of these are important, but none of them can be done well without recognizing that God is the glue. He holds everything together. When our relationship with Him is on point, everything else flows from the harmony we achieve with Him. It’s the familiarity with the way He moves and works in us that creates a closeness that cannot be found in any other relationship. Heavenly Father wants us to know Him better with each passing day. He has a willingness to allow Himself to be known, and when we bring an attitude of gratitude for this into our prayer lives, we will get to know Him better, and become more confident in His desire to bless us.■
