I often think about a woman that lived in my small town and was known by everyone for her tireless work and care for her family, church, and community. Well loved and respected, I remember her always being there when someone had a need. The thing that sticks out most in my memory of her is that I never saw her laugh or smile. Her humility was unquestionable, but joy seemed to be another matter altogether. After a sudden illness, she died in the hospital with only one person by her side. I’m told her last words were, “I’m tired. I’m just so tired.”
It seemed to me that the story of her life might well be her selfless acts of kindness, but the backdrop didn’t appear to be one of happiness and fulfillment. This is perhaps because, although she knew about Christian duty, she didn’t know enough about the promises in God’s Word to overflow with the joy of Jesus Christ. She neglected to trust that she was just as precious as all God’s other children, and that she didn’t have to wait to die in order to bask in His infinite well of joy and peace.
God’s Word is the living truth. He has preserved and provided it for us to live by, and many of His promises that are written in His Word can be fulfilled while we yet live. This is exceptionally Good News indeed! 2 Corinthians 1:20(NLT) declares, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” This is phenomenal! Heavenly Father is telling us that all the promises He has made to those of us that have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord are guaranteed. They are a resounding “YES, it’s yours!” in Christ. The only thing that you and I have to do is say “AMEN! Thank You, Father!” And this “AMEN” that is spoken in our hearts and out of our mouths brings us in harmony with the faith that we can be what God says we can be, and we can have what God says we can have.
John 10:10
The sacrifice and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, accomplished so much for us that it would be impossible to number everything. It will take us an eternity, and then some, to live out the wealth of the blessings God has bestowed upon us through Christ. Because of sin, we were imprisoned by darkness, but God set us free to live abundantly in every way! Jesus Christ tells us in John 10:10 (NKJV), “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” This promise is foundational to our faith. It sets the stage for claiming all the other blessings of God for a prosperous, healthy, and fulfilling existence.
John 14:27
Jesus Christ told the disciples in John 14:27(NLT), “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” This verse is for all believers in him. Christ has given us a peace that the world cannot give and cannot take away. His peace is an inside job. It’s something we receive when we are born again of God’s Spirit. This promise of Christ informs us that we never have to force his peace, we simply need to surrender to it, and allow God’s Spirit to comfort us with his peace that passes all understanding.
Hebrews 4:16
We’re living in very complex and perilous times. Modern technology and the intellectual advancements we’ve made have caused some to think that their problems are too big for God to solve, but that is never the case. As tangled and confusing as our lives can be, God always has the right answer, but we must trust and honor Him. We must believe in His willingness and ability to use His great power on our behalf’s. His assurance is revealed in the promise and invitation of Hebrews 4:16(NLT). It says, “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” None of us have the answers to all of life’s problems, but we can be sure that Heavenly Father does. We can come boldly to His throne of mercy without shame or condemnation. There, He offers us grace in our time of need.
Philippians 4:13
Sometimes, we don’t feel like we’re enough. The circumstances and situations of life can have us so perplexed and exhausted that we feel empty. Not in a million years did we think we’d be in the position we find ourselves in, and we can’t imagine that we have the strength to turn things around. Through Christ, we do! Philippians 4:13(NKJV) affirms, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” There is no parallel to the strength of Christ, our Lord, and he invites us to lean upon it with all that we are. His strength will never fail us, and we can be infinitely more than we ever dreamed we would be if we have faith in it.
Philippians 4:19
Our Heavenly Father is our Provider and Protector. He is everything to us. He tells us in Proverbs 3:5 to trust Him with all our hearts and don’t lean on our own understanding. Some of us struggle with this. When we’ve been praying a while to have a need met, and things are not going as we had expected, some of us are tempted to try to get ahead of God and do things our way. This is never a good idea. We must rely totally on God’s provision and be obedient to His direction. Philippians 4:19(NKJV) tells us, “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” This is God’s promise, and He always keeps His promises. No matter how challenging and uncomfortable life may be, God is faithful. He will take care of our every need when we place our faith in Him.
Jude 1:24-25
When we’re close to the finish line of actually witnessing the manifestation of the blessing we’ve prayed to receive, sometimes things go completely haywire. It can feel like we’ve taken one step forward and two steps backward. Giving up may cross your mind, but never give into that thought. It’s not unusual for the enemy to pull some ‘last try’ shenanigans to discourage and throw us off the path, but we must recognize this deceptive tactic. Know that God has your back and keep the faith. Jude 1:24-25 (KJV) tells us, “24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.” Don’t focus on what the enemy is doing, look up and focus on the power and glory of our Heavenly Father. No matter the problem or goal, God promises to keep us from falling so that our faith remains strong in Him, and we continue to grow and flourish in Christ.
Romans 8:28
The amount of details that God is working out behind the scene just so that you can take the next breath are staggering. They are too numerous for the human mind to calculate. Isaiah 55:9 tells us that God’s thoughts are infinitely higher than our thoughts, because He knows everything there is to know. In His omnipotence and omniscience, He’s faithfully working behind the scenes on all the details we can’t see. He’s the glue that holds our lives together.
Romans 8:28(NKJV) says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” This promise is absolutely amazing for those who truly love and honor God in their hearts! We must understand that we didn’t choose God first, He chose us first. He has set us apart and given us a purpose within His Will and Plan, and He’s done this because it brings Him pleasure. He doesn’t want our minds filled with worry and anxiety. He wants us to rest in the knowledge that He knows everything there is to know, and even though we don’t see Him working everything out for our good, we can have every confidence that He is. ■
